umm, the 8100 is not the only BB out there...if people want a "business only" tool, they got the 8700-series and 7103s. I guess it's a bad thing that RIM, as a business, wants to expand to the regular consumer right?

As mentioned before, the 8100 is RIM's first crack at a multimedia business device....like a Treo but without the crashes. The 8700's do have the ability to play certain types of mp3's but there is not a media player per say. You can only have mp3's as ringtones and whatnot.

What i'm trying to say is, RIM will probably get better media software fixes as time goes on; and if the 8100 really catches on. Treo has had the market on multimedia devices for so long, it may be an uphill battle for RIM.

I dont know if its good for business, but I can't stand all in one units.

A phone and a PDA - fine

but a phone, a pda, and a mp3 player, and a camera, is IMHO, a toy for kids.

heh well

I made an effort to go and look at the 8100.

I am sorry people, but its not a blackberry as I see them.
What is that joystick thing in the middle? Its too small to do anything productive.

Its a pimped out candy bar phone.

You might as well get LG Chocolate and have more fun

You can't get email instantilly on a Chocolate... Plus its a bar not a slider... Plus LGs OS isn't as good. Plus its got a QWERTY keyboard. Plus suretype (which I love)... Last but not least... Its not Verizon

It's called instigating on the internet. The person who is not forced to use the product, doesn't like it and has no plans on purchasing it, complains about it on the product's message board just for the sake of arguing.

Well, you know what they say about opinions, right?...

This is what us youngsters refer to as a "Flame War", so here is my fuel:

If a BlackBerry "as [you] see them" is the old black and white LCD screen ones, that don't even have a phone, then go buy one of those. I'm sure they are pretty cheap on eBay. Me, I'll take my pearl.

My point? It's all relative.

I wonder if I can get an 8100 that runs on Mobitex :-/
(SOOOO joking)

I got my 8100 today and LOVE it so far. yeah, I have to convert all of my video files which is a pain... but I will likely carry the 8100 most of the time instead of my 8700g (maybe I'll switch it up and use my 6710 on crazy days!)
I found I didnt need the full keyboard as much as I thought, and the 8100 is SSSOOO much cuter than the 8700 :-D (of course I also still have to carry around my Samsung t809 which also has mp3 and video because I use it as a modem as there are no Blackberry modem drivers for Linux)

Ok enough of my rambling...

If there were a Windows Media Player-like app, that WOULD be nice, but unfortunatly not.

Maybe Winamp will come out with a version for the BB?

RDC - you got anything positive you'd like to add?
I'm not seeing much value in your posts. In any event, I think the 8100 is great. Fantastic form factor. Great screen. Very light and compact. Love the camera.

You are entitled to your opinion, even it is wrong

All I am trying to say is that BB's were not and should not be multimedia devices.
Its a business tool. Designed to handle quick email and phone communication.
For Mp3s - get an IPOD. After all you can't beat Apple in UI design.

But if RIM is trying to pick up the teen crowd, then Perl is perfect start for that.

What if you have professional blog, or are an artistic writer, and you want to take a picture of something intriguing you see and write a blurb about it. Would you not want the most effiecent device for email functionality since all major blog API's accept email posting. Not to mention you can get instant updates of your readership and statistics. Say you want to write reviews of a band from a song sample based on first reactions, someone emails you a file with the sample or they send you a link and you download the song and listen to it on the go and contact all of your associates with what you find.

So yeah, I guess artistic and entertainment related buisness applications don't fall into your realm of buisness... but I have told all of my friends in the industry about the pearl and the consensus response is 'Finally a blackberry that meets my needs, I've been waiting for this.'

I have been a big fan of BB and have had one for the past 4 years .... i use mine completel for personal use ..... in any event i like where RIM is going ..... i was a BB user that carried and extra phone ... why you ask ... well at first it was for the ringtones and camera ... then itunes ... nothing like eating lunch in the breakroom and putting your speaker on and having some mood music ... i also love taking pics of things and sending them to my friends... with the 8100 (and i refuse to call it "pearl" cause it sounds so sissy) i can give up the other phone (my pink slvr.. j/k) ... and i hate suretype ... just had to say that

back to the topic of this thread ... i am sure eventually they will have a better media player but this is all new so we have to give them a minute to get there .... as for all the media stuff we should be happy with what we got ...well at least for now ... cause we have bigger fish to fry with this model

say what you will, but RIM is going into the direction of PocketPC.
There I said it.

And its'a wrong direction.
Because 90% of RIM's sales are based on enterprise business.
You think that market share needs a cheesy 1.3Megapixel camera?

yaeh right...

First of all, what kind of businessman has the time to go on like this, posting the same point on these boards... over and over?

Secondly, Who want's to carry a phone, mp3 player AND a camera with them at all times? I'll take the device that CONSOLIDATES all these features for me. Sounds like good sense to ANY businessman.

Finally, RIM can continue making the bricks for the more utilitarian business crowd, and a Pearl-style consumer device .... and CLEAN UP. That sounds like the right direction to me.

Besides, any good businessman would never think as "inside-the-box" as to suggest that RIM LIMIT the functionality of their devices. Just make sure the email comes in!!!

P.S.: The scrollball is WAY friendlier to lefties.

Help me out here - Windows Mobile 5 (which USED to be called PocketPC) is a threat to RIM. So they have responded, as any well run business would. Sitting around saying "we have a better product" and you end up like Palm.

90% of RIMs sales are based on enterprise? Where do you get/make up your numbers?

RIM has to grow - waiting for you to upgrade your BB is not going to let them grow, so they have to think differently (at least concede that point) in order to get NEW customers.

And not all of them are teens. Just in your mind.

Enjoy your rants. The Pearl isn;t going anywhere.

All in one devices are useless. They promise alot, but they cant deliver 100%.

This topic is here to prove it .

Sure, RIM added an mp3 capabilities to the BB, but it did it to just say - hey, its there. Mp3 on BB! Wow!

BTW, If you are professional, you wont depend on a 1.3Megapixel camera.
Heh, as a professional, you wont even consider using to anything that small, MP wise.

Very few camera phones actually take decent pics. And as far as I know, Nokia is the leader there, mainly of the optics they use. But thats only if you are into that kind of thing...taking pictures for blog

Chime in here.... I am always in the need for the smallest damn phone I can get with the most functionality. As a photographer, I think that camera phones are crap. If I drop my snooty nose for just a moment, they are still crap...BUT... they have a place in taking pictures of a product, a car crash, something basic and you don't have a real camera around. As far as MP3 players go, the iPod is KING.... BUT, when I find myself bored in some waiting room, appointment entanglement, its nice to have a little diversion in my pocket for a podcast, or a tune. Video falls into this same category. Do I want to watch the latest blockbuster on a little 2 inch screen? NO.. but what I would not give to have a diversion in my wife GYN appointment when all the magazines are Ladies Home Journal.
Then it also does all the wonderful BB functions of surfing, mapping, calculating, push email, and they don't crash (at least mine never have) - So before I carried a SLVR or RAZR to get that small form factor that would go in my pocket, then I had the 8700 that I did not carry as much as I wanted because it was too damn big (I am also a fashion snob, and a brick hanging from my belt is just way too nerdy for me, and wearing pants that two of me could fit in does not work either) - So now I am happy, little bugs and all, to have a phone that is slightly smaller than a SLVR in length and only about 1 - 1.5mm thicker, that does all this, and I am basically a good Boy Scout...PREPARED... wherever I am.
I am eagerly awaiting a few minor bug fixes, Cingular to officially support it, Pocketmac to allow me to sync it to my computer (Windoze sucks)... but I have never been happier with a phone to date. AND I sold my SLVR and my 8700 on ebay and MADE money on the switch!!! Life is good....

They can't deliver 100% is not "useless". Useless is "They can't even deliver 1%".

Again... I don't carry a digital camera around, so the BB Pearl one is a nice thing to have.. AND it makes it easy to associate pics with contacts when you get a call.

The MP3 player, for functional purposes, is a HUGE step up, and here's why; assigning ringtones to specific callers is a big leap for BB's to begin with... but if I assign "BBcalypso" to Joe and BBjazz" to Mary... fact is, I'll never remember which ringtone belongs to each contact, simply because the generic ringtones don't REMIND me of that contact. I have an MP3 player.... the BB one isn't replacing it... but it's a nice addition to the phone, for reasons stated above. My wife gets the Nina Hagen ringtone, my folks get the Sinatra ringtone... you get the picture.

I'm a project manager AND I head up the sales dept. for a NYC construction firm. I'm also a regular person who happens to think the Pearl is the best BB yet. I like that's it's thin and light and that it has all these features. Calling multi-feature devices "useless" is obtuse, at best. Do you have a Pearl? I've been using mine all week, and I cherish it.

With that being said, the pro-pearl point is clear, and so is your con perspective.

NEXXXXTT!!!!

Do I have "Perl"? No.
I considered it, but did not get it.

I never buy a model that comes out.

Obviously, its not the case with RIM fans on these forums.
Looks like they buy anything RIM puts out the minute it puts it out.
How dare anyone say anything negative about it!

New models are usually filled with little problems that you have to fix by downloading endless patches and updates.

But if you wait for next one or the one after - you should have a relatively solid unit.

One poster asked where I got the 90% enterprise #.
Google for Blackberry market share.

I *always* believe what I read in Google.

Again, you attack a model YOU DO NOT EVEN own (forget that it's the Pearl and not the name of a scripting language).

You are entitled to your opinion. Based on a device you don't have.

Does sound a bit foolish to me. But that's just MY opinion.

I have hated every Suretype device that came out. Gave them away. But the Pearl is a keeper.

what can I say.

RIM got you hooked

If they can sell you a unit, that looks just like another phone, and claim its a BB.

well, i rest my case. $300 well spent

I don't think it's a perfect unit, nor do I think RIM is infallible...

I just think that this is a good phone. I have it, I use it, and I like it!
You haven't used it yet, but it's useless, right?

I once heard someone say "Actually, not everyone IS entitled to an opinion. People without the facts are not entitled to an opinion".

Bravo. You don't have the phone, you haven't used it..... Your opinion is worth just about what we paid for it. To use another colorful turn-of -phrase, Your opinion and $1.00 will buy me a Snapple.

What is that joystick thing in the middle? Its too small to do anything productive.

Its a pimped out candy bar phone.

You might as well get LG Chocolate and have more fun

this thread is funny.
What business is it that you're in where phonecalls are not at LEAST as important as email? Oh.... you're the guy with 14 separate devices strapped to his belt.

Why not get a bandelier? you could be like some kind of corporate Chewbacca!

"Chewie! The Jenkins account on line 1!!"

"Rowwrrrr!!!"
