Question How to read/write Chinese on Pearl aka 8100? - 09-30-2006, 10:22 AM

Hi,

Does anybody know how to read and write in Chinese on a BB 8100? Will the older version of OS/DM software work on 8100?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It seems that there is still no multi-lingual version of DM 4.2 just yet. So is it okay to run version 4.1 on Pearl instead? Any gotcha's? I would hope to have the support of Chinese, Japanese, French and German. Thanks!

so ein pech

the new update only includes languages and input support of the following:

UK English
French
German
Italian
Spanish
Portugese (Brazilian)
Catalan
Dutch
Turkish

Input Support:

Portugese
Danish
Swedish
Afrikaans
Greek

Also supported are:

Semitic characters and fonts (normally includes Arabic, Hebrew, etc; not too sure though)
Korean characters and fonts

So I am only partially satisfied.......don't know how they picked up the list, really surprised to see Catalan support there, no offense, only because not too many people are using it anyway

Anybody having or knowing where to get the chinese.alx and japanese.alx?? (I never tried them before but would really like to have them!)

I tried to add the chinese.alx which comes with the StarHub BB7200 OS...it appeared that it was loading the Simplified and Traditional Chinese fonts and characters into the BB, (together around 1MB), however at the end, it DID NOT WORK, language list stayed the same (english, french, german)

At least I can read emails and websites in chinese now! Hooray!

Just need to figure out how to do the input though, since my (Language list/input option list) still does not show chinese. And I don't see any Localization menu, yucks!

Kevin, you must want to give it a try as well rather than waiting I will try to find the japanese.alx and add it..... i guess this is an endless game

The language packs are built into the OS. It your choice if you want to install them or not. The Rogers OS will work with your T Mobile 8100. You'll have to delete the vendor.xml file though.

I dowloaded the roger wireless update and installed it on my PC, and at the end, all it says that installation finished but it didnt push anything to my blackberry so i am not sure whether i need to initiate the update from manually, but it didn't seem to have installed the OS on the 8100. I checked the status on the 8100 and it still shows the initial version from T-Mobile.

I've found a way to make Chinese display work. You just need to download these two files and load it with AppLoader. Pearl reboots after the update and comes back in 5 minutes.

(Edit: Can't post links yet. Just remove the "REMOVEME" part in the URLs.)

1. net_rim_font_chinese.alx
wREMOVEMEww.hipalm.com/attachment.php?aid=16527

2. net_rim_font_chinese.cod
wREMOVEMEww.hipalm.com/attachment.php?aid=16526

Enjoy!

I have followed the direction to install the chinese font into my 8100. However, when I sent a testing email to myself, I can only see partial Chinese characters. Just curious, the font is for simplified chinese or traditional chinese?

Thanks.

OK, I tried to download the ROM for 7290g from

1010.hkcsl.com/jsp/biz_1010solution/biz_1010solution_1010office_bb_e_help_support_down loads.jsp]{CSL1010}

After extract the downloaded file, goto

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader\<ROM Folder>\java

Dig out the file net_rim_font_chinese_hong_kong.cod and create a file net_rim_font_chinese_hong_kong.alx.

You can also come to this site to download the files.

iceycake.blogspot.com/2006/10/viewing-chinese-with-t-mobiles-rim.html

Use the Application Loader to load in net_rim_font_chinese_hong_kong.alx and here you will have the traditional chinese font in the BlackBerry 8100

I've not been here for a few days...wow...

Basically I think I made myself clear that what I did was grabbing the chinese.alx which includes the .cod files for both simplified and traditional chinese...(it is highly advised to install both fonts, otherwise you might have partial display issues)

I got my chinese.alx from the StarHub OS for other blackberry models (also older OS version, i only installed the chinese.alx on top of my 4.2 Rogers OS), however Chinese display worked on both emails/web sites though the Languages list did not show chinese, only English/french/german...

The only thing is still I could not write in Chinese.

Did anybody succeed in being able to input Chinese on BB 8100 yet?

Hi there,

I am new to the group. After reading all the posts, I am excited about the ability to read simplified Chinese from my 8100. However, I am also confused with the seemingly conflicting posts.

I'd highly appreciate if someone could summarize what one needs to do to get a 8100 to read Simplified Chinese?

I did quite a bit research in the past few days but wasn't able to find a way to make it work. How long does it normally take for RIM to release a multi-language OS that includes full Chinese/Japanese/Korean support after the product has been shipped? Does anyone have any empirical data?

The BlackBerry OS is built by multiple modules. I'm sure the Chinese input methods are just one of the modules. Anyway, the 8100 is my first BlackBerry and I'm experimenting the device with the JDE/emulator. Once I have any more clue, I will post here (unless RIM releases the CJK version of 4.2 ROM).

Chinese will not be included in the Multilanguage releases, so don't expect to see it until one of the Asian carriers releases the 8100. It will specifically state 'Chinese' in the release.

Japanese input is not available, nor will it be for another 6-9 months. I believe Simplified Chinese is the only Mandarin input available. Korean input is available, I believe.

Default how difficult to hack the .alx or .cod files - 10-12-2006, 04:44 PM

after all, they do not look like really big files...maybe we could do some modifications ourselves to make it compatible with the new Rogers 4.2 OS??

chinese is not included in the multi-lang release, i guess it mainly is because in china or in Asia, there're not too many BB users, otherwise chinese support would be vital in the success of BB....

japanese people do not seem to like blackberry too much, however what the heck..

heh. i honestly don't have it. if i receive something before it's released to the public, then i'll be happy to share, though. give it about 1-2 months, though. something should be available from the asian carriers at that point, i would think.

pinchao,

Since I am mainly interested in simplified Chinese, so I suppose post #23 is out of the question?

As to your post of #18, I am not able to download the files you mentioned from the web pages provided after 'REMOVE' is removed. In fact I was getting message like "附件文件不存在或无法读入,请与管理员联系". Any suggestion?

I guess the links I posted don't work anymore.

You can go to iceycake's site to download both simplified Chinese and traditional Chinese fonts. Thanks Iceycake for hosting the files.
