Not sure what you want to hear. You basically answered your own question. Setup your handheld to act as a modem for your computer and surf the web using your unlimited data connection.

Remember, please try searching first!

Need a screenshot? ... Like JavaLoader?
Try using BBscreen .....Use JL_Cmder!
or BBScreenShooter!

Krad,

I think what you're asking about is the service necessary on your account to utilize unlimited data. Your carrier should offer an add on service for a recurring monthly amount so whenever you connect it will use that service.

Hope that helps.

I have setup the pearl over bluetooth to my laptop....

I then get a dial up connection box on my screen asking for me to dial a number and a login and password.

i tried the *99# and my phone number and it didn't work....

Maybe i am missing something.....

My company has bes 3.6.....

I am able to pair my comptuer with the pearl with either audio or dial up networking....

I haven't tried yet, but I read that Bluetooth support for tethered modem capabilities have actually been disabled with the 4.x Desktop Manager series. Someone please correct me if you have gotten it to work. Again, correct me if I'm wrong, but the 8100 needs Desktop Manager 4.2 in order to operate.

However, I have BES as well and am using my 8100 as a modem for my laptop via USB with no problems. I average around 120kbps on EDGE. If you need help setting that up, there are some other threads in here that I can link to.

One thing you might try -- under Phones/Modems, click on the virtual RIM modem that you have set up, and be sure that in the advanced properties, you have the line:

at+cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.voicestream.com"

That line is needed for USB connections, and I'd assume that the Bluetooth would need it as well. Also, be sure that Desktop Manager is open and says "Connected".

I just setup two mda's with tmobile for bluetooth internet to the laptop....

the dialing is simple for that... dial *99#

SO this is how i am going to try it tonight....

You do not need desktop manager for this i believe.

1. Turn on bluetooth on laptop
2. Turn on bluetooth on 8100
3. Pair devices thus creating a modem on the laptop.
4. create a new manual internet dial up connection.
5. Input *99# for the phone number.
6. no username and or password.
7. If you get an error 739 you need to go on the web on the phone to initate the connection.

I don't see how this won't work for the 8100....but i will test it the second i get home...

or right now on a spare laptop.

I want to add something to this topic.

I still can not get it to work on my computer. I found out that I need Microsoft Bluetooth Driver. You can not get it from the Internet unfortunely.

You can only get it from the Win XP Service Pack 2.

I am going to try find Win XP Service Pack 2 and try get the Bluetooth driver from there. And than I will try again.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 should be freely available via Windows Update. However, whatever bluetooth stack came with the drivers for your bluetooth adapter should work.

That's what I get sometimes when I connect though a cable. I asked this question before but never got a reply.

It's a good thing it does not happen often.

My guess is, there might be a problem with T-mobile server.

So just try again in few hours.

If you find the driver pass it on. I've looked everywhere for it even though I have Win XP SP2.

The driver that came with the Bluetooth adapter for the computer comes with something else. I forgot what it is called. I think it starts with a W.

I heard that driver will not work on the 8100.

Anyway, I think I have the Microsoft Bluetooth driver on a CD someplace at the house. I just have to look for it.

Default Widcomm bluetooth driver doesn't work - 10-04-2006, 10:48 PM

I have an Iogear Bluetooth 2.0 dongle. I was able to do a bluetooth sync with the Microsoft bluetooth driver, but could never connect. When I installed the Widcomm bluetooth driver I downloaded from the Iogear website, I was able to do a lot of bluetooth stuff with my other bluetooth devices and was able to install the 8100 as a modem and as an audio gateway, but I could never connect to the internet with the 8100. I don't know that I will ever have the need to use the Pearl as a bluetooth modem, because I can always attach it via USB and get the benefit of using it as a modem and having it recharge at the same time.

You enter the string in the "PHONE and MODEM" control panel - select your Blackberry modem.

But.... These instructions worked for me:

Try it!

You CANNOT use the 8100 as a modem with the Widcomm stack (Drivers provided by BT manufacturer) Only with the microsoft stack.

In our Testing at Tmobile we only have had one of our Agents get the Widcomm stack to work with tethering, and that was me, but when i tried to repeat the process It would not work, It is unreliable and I have not found a proper troubleshooting flow to get it to work.

So in otherwords, until I figure out how I got the Widcomm stack to work for BT tether or one of you guys do, the only gaurentee'd way (and the only way you will get support from Tmobile Tier III) is if you are using the Microsoft XP SP2 Stack.

This is the problem I have. It works fine with a USB cable but through bluetooth it dials and just hangs. Ninjatek I believe is correct. It needs the Microsoft drivers. Plus the instructions from Blackberry states only the Windows stack will work but it appears theres no way to obtain just those drivers.

you do not need the desktop manager for this.

you need to create a new dial up connection in xp and tell it to use the bluetooth modem. From there you dial *99# if you use tmobile and see if you get onto tmobile broadband with your pearl. you might have to input the string above in the modem advanced tab.

I have gotten this to work with a laptop with microsoft bluetooth stack... just not with the widcomm versions.

Wondering what the point of your post is?

We already have someone above that said they have no problems with a mac. Are you just rubbing it in?

IMHO... Not to point you out or anything... but imho anyone who buys a Mac is a fool. I don't understand why anyone would pay 1/2 to 3/4 more money for a computer with a lockdown, standalone operating system. Windows isn't the greatest o/s either, i am not starting an o/s war, but linux is much better, there are hundreds of distros, it is more powerful, mostly opensource software....

So what you are saying to me is.... "I have money to burn, I am not bright enough to use an advanced operating system, give me the k-12 comptuers my kids use in school..blah blah blah. nah nah poo poo, i probably have a volkswagon or a hybrid because i need to be cooler than you and everyone else to make myself feel important....

Or

Your the type of person who had to get a macbook or macbook pro to do the dual boot into windows. Thinking you would have the best of both worlds. But still not bright enough to just load osx86 on a laptop half the price with the same hardware.

_______________________________________________

A quick fix from Rim, which they are working on will allow the proper use of the much more powerful widcomm bluetooth stack.

Do you fellas have the microsoft bluetooth stack loaded or the Widcomm or other?

When you pair your phone to your computer, you want to click on dial up networking. This will install the bluetooth modem on your computer. Goto device manager and right click the properties of the modem and goto the advanced tab. In there input....

at+cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.voicestream.com"

then hit ok.

As a test, initiate a pair with the phone and make sure your bluetooth is flashing.

Now, goto network connections and create a new dial up connection.

Have it dial *99# and do not input a login or a password. Hit configure and select the bluetooth modem.

If you hit connect, it should activate the phone and you will see it say dialing *99#.

This is where my setup stalls....

on a laptop with the microsoft stack, it says connected and goes to the bottom right part of the screen next to the clock.

It is confirmed that widcomm stack is not compatiable yet. But if you have microsoft stack with the usb bluetooth, you should connect properly on the first try.

Make sure under the bluetooth settings of the device on your blackberry that you have your computer as "always" trusted...

this will allow the computer ot connect to your blackberry right away very seamless.

Krad, I got it working!!!! (I'm way excited)

and not just USB, but BT!!! (WinXP)

Follow the instructions for the tetherd version, for the bluetooth part, change your bluetooth modem to the windows xp "standard modem".

Make sure you do this through the device manager, goto the driver tab of the bluetooth modem, update the driver, select "standard modem"

if you have the USB version installed, it will now create a "standard modem #2"

just double check your settings match those of the USB version, and reconnect via the network connections, dialup connection you have.

if you connect via your BT icon in the sys tray (quickconnect) you'll get a error, so only connect via the network connections area...

Feel free to contact me, i'll work on updating and making this easier to follow.

**EDIT**

This is using the Widcomm drivers (Billionton PC Card) on a Dell 700m, Blackberry 8100

Hi guys,

I've successfully set up my 8100 and used it a couple of times as a BT modem - works perfectly.

But the performance is slooow... fastest speed I seem to get is about 33K.

Is this network dependent or is there anything I need to do locally to beef this up?

Thanks,

Andy

Went into device manager... clicked Update Driver, picked "install from specific list", then Don't Search, unchecked the "compatible" box... Got the list... Under MFG on the left, I selected "standard modem types" and the box on the right... I picked "standard modem"...

I got "ERROR 10. Device can not start" and a yellow ! on it. Does not work from there.

I had to change back to the Broadcom Bluetooth Modem driver.

NOTE: This is on an IBM Thinkpad T41, IBM Integrated Bluetooth III (CSR based bluetooth radio chip), and Widcomm/Broadcom v5.1.0.1100 drivers.

FOR WINDOWSXPEEE. you Have to use it USB via the cable. Call TMOBILE then ask for BB Support. THey will walk you through each step to get it connected. you MUST have the unlimited data plan. which most/all of us have with the blackberry. Almost every GPRS/EDGE blackberry is supported for Internet Connectivity with a PC. For mac Users goto

fibble.org (plus there is a post on here too for OSX users)

You may also find a post on here how to set it up. But calling customer support is simple and less time consuming.

So basically to sum up this thread,
There is no bluetooth modem support for users using the Bluetooth Windcomm drivers?

Users who are using OSX or microsoft stack drivers have had luck.

Does anyone have a simple way to get the microsoft bluetooth drivers for users who have built in bluetooth supported by other manufactures?

Krad, how'd you find out about this? Do you think it's a reliable source? I've read on Howard Forums and elsewhere that blackberry does not and will not support widcomm. Your post is the only thing I've seen that offers a ray of hope. I'm using a billionton PCMCIA card, which is generally awesome, but about as useful as a rock with my Pearl.
