If you look at their plan details for BB Unlimited and Blackberry Tethered they are identical. So I'm not sure why you would pay over $30 more for tethering. The device can only download so much data anyway.

Unlimited? Is this the same as free, aka no additional cost.

Seems like from the Cingular site the 'tethering' plan is certainly more per month than the unlimited data plan.

but the question is are they just being liars that make you pay more for something that is identical or can they actually tell that you are using tethering and not just blackberry internet.

Spoke to a CR at Cingular. Basically, they told me that on the current 29.99 plan, I should not be able to use it as a modem. They said that if I was, it could be likened to stealing cable. Then, the rep said that there was really no way to stop anyone who is not tethered from using their pearl as a modem. When I asked why they charged so much extra for tethering, he said he didn't know.
Just thought I would pass on the info.

8100 tmobile modem (display caller I.D. on the pc) -
03-30-2007, 12:21 PM
Hey, Here's a question for the experts, when I'm using the pearl as a modem, I have it connected with a short 6" usb cable and a universal mount that slips into a holder on the back of the pc's screen that way if I need to move the pc I don't have to pick up both the laptop and the phone. I got tired of picking up my Pearl when it crashes to the floor. it's a nice set-up, but?
It would be really cool if I could see who's calling on the pc's screen. any ideas, if this is possible?

You'd need some sort of data plan. I don't know which one Rogers would require

I have not seen any programming for such, where the phone interface can show on a PC screen. Not sure if someone is working on that.
In the old days, about five years ago, companies would sell wireless access to a PC notebook, using the phone as a modem. They would include a holder for the phone that would attach to the notebook screen.
I seem to recall some that actually mounted the phone on the right or left edge of the screen so that the phone faced toward you and you could see the phone's display.
For my Dell Axim PDA I had a program that allowed one to view on a computer screen a mirror of what was on the PDA. I also could use the PC to type data or whatever on to the PDA.
In fact, that program now works with Windows based Smartphones so it's just a matter of time before someone comes up with such for the Pearl?
SOTI, Inc. - Remote Control, Management and Support of all Windows based mobile devices
I like the idea of being able to access anything on the Pearl via an on screen PC interface.

I know it's been asked but I haven't seen a response... for VISTA users (I'm just on the 32-bit), I set up the connection but I don't know where to enter the string +cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.cingular"... i don't see a spot for Extra Initialization Commands:
anyone know?

Cingular "orange" customer here. . . -
04-25-2007, 02:07 PM
I used the tips on BBForums to set up my tethering. . . and Cingy could tell.
Not sure how.. . but they charged me ~$80 more for the month where I started tethering.
Lucky I only used it two times that initial month. February 2007, if you're wondering.
Hope this helps. Maybe you'll be lucky and get it at no charge, but I was not so lucky.
FYI: I'm on BES and I have the "unlimited data" plan.

My thread and setup instructions are for T-Mobile, which has a confirmed unlimited data plan. Even
though it is unlimited, T-Mo still knows the minutes used.
Everyone needs to check with other carriers, explain exactly what they intend
to do [tether] and make sure what the carrier charges for such use.

I am also with T Mobile, who was very helpful in configuring everything and also confirmed that there was no cost. I used my BB with my laptop last week for 5 days in Chicago (the hotel wanted $10 a day for wireless) and it worked great. Even used it on the airlpane sitting through a 2 hour weather delay at DFW - The only downside is that you cannot be on line and on the phone at the same time.

Unlike T-mobile, with Cingular, you have to pay extra to have a tether plan. It cost ridiculously high. That's why I have t-mobile.
Check Cingular website to get more information on that plan.

Except for Cingular blue (old att). I pay $24.99 a month for unlimited BIS. Also tether for free. I know that blue will be fading away soon. This is when i will go T-mobile. Will never migrate to Cingular Orange.

BTW, SanFran, I do hope you realize that my " " was not meant at you. I very much appreciate this forum, and your threads and contributions have made me look like a genius to my coworkers on more than a couple of occasions.
For every "orange" cingular customer out there. . . there is a tethering plan that is more than $50 per month. . . I can't remember the price b/c it was outrageous, and I didn't bother considering it. How in the world can I already be paying for "unlimited" data, and then have to pay ~$50 more for more "unlimited" data!!!
Anyway, lucky you have TMobile in this case, I guess!

Actually, if you would get the tethering plan INSTEAD of the blackberry data plan. The unlimited tethering plain INCLUDES unlimited blackberry data too.

Could someone help me out? I was able to get internet access through my blackberry pearl on my desktop computer whe connected via the bb usb cable. Works great! I can't seem to get internet access on my laptop using a bluetooth connection. I installed the desktop manager on my laptop and was able to establish a bluetooth connection. That works. I followed the directions given in the first post of this thread (using the appropriate settings for Cingular), but when I try to dial I get an "Error connecting to Blackberry" window with the following message: Error 633: The modem or (other connecting device) is already in use or is not configured properly. Is there anything different I need to do when following the instructions in the first post if I'm trying to use bluetooth?

I assume you are on your desk/ laptop. Once connected via the BB modem just launch your computers browser and away you go...

Hi,
I followed the instructions exactly. Just after the "Registering your computer dialog", I get the following error:

You do NOT use your phone's browser, this procedure is so to use the Pearl
as a modem on your notebook or desktop, then to use that modem connection
to open up your desktop's or notebook's browser.
To use your Pearl's browser, you set that up on the phone and simply click the
Pearl's browser icon.

Not sure why so many are limited to 155k, as I am pulling 160-192k. I have the connetion speed displaying "230.4 Kbps," just for the hell of it.
