Error 734: The PPP link control protocol was terminated.

This error is generally caused by you using the wrong username or password. The "Include Windows logon domain" check box is selected or the "Require secured password" setting is selected.

FIX 1:

Confirm Username and Password or renter them before connecting. Check that Caps etc are not on. Most logins are case sensitive.

FIX 2:

Click "Start", point to "Connect To", and then click your dial-up connection.

Click "Properties", and then click the "Options" tab.

Click to clear the "Include Windows logon domain" check box (if it is selected), and then click OK.

FIX 3:

Click "Start", point to "Connect To", and then click your dial-up connection.

In the "Connect" dialog box, click "Properties".

Click the "Security" tab.

Under "Security options", click "Allow unsecured password" in the "Validate my identity as follows" box, and then click "OK"

what in the world?!

Error 692 or 630: There was a hardware failure in the modem (or other connecting device).

First, turn off the computer and the modem if it is external. It’s possible that there is a bad modem memory stack and rebooting the computer will likely flush it. Reboot the computer and try to connect.
If that doesn’t work, go to Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Modems -> Diagnostics and get More Info from your modem. If it fails, your modem driver is corrupt and needs to be re-installed.
If it works, go back to Modems -> General -> Properties -> Advanced and remove any initialization strings. Try connecting again.
If this fails, create a new Dial up connection using the same modem and try to connect with it.
After you have tried all of these steps, if you are still getting error 630 then it is very likely that the modem itself is physically damaged. Contact your modem’s manufacturer (bberry) for more help regarding the problem.

Does this work with at&t

I got the set up to work with the wap.cingular setting. I am on a BES with the unlimited data plan using Cingular (not sure if its Blue or Orange). I was getting the Device Hardware Failure message until I started the Desktop Manager application. I also found that I had to have at least the Desktop Manager or Device Manager running to connect. If it was not I then got the error message.

Try uninstalling DeskTop Manager.

Reboot.

Then connect the Pearl.

Then install DeskTop Manger.

See if that causes the ports to show up.

For those of you who do not know what he is talking about, here is a snapshot of my Device Manager showing the RIM ports.

Just had to set up mine again as it quit working somewhere during an upgrade of OS or DM (not sure which one as I don't use this feature that often) but I had to use the following string with my Pearl on TMo:

+cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.voicestream.com"

SF's original post says to use: +cgdcont=1,,"wap.voicestream.com"

but I had no luck with that string. I got an error 628. The "IP" was necessary in between the two commas and then it all worked fine.

This info can also be found at Main Page - BlackBerryFAQ (that's where I found the string with the "IP" in it.)

I can use my pearl to connect to the internet and works great. Even had 200 kb/s download and 50 kb/s upload. But after about 5 minutes of connection, the internet just dies. Whenever I try to load a new webpage the connection times out. The bytes sent keeps going up but the bytes received stands still. Here is my info:

+cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.voicestream.com"

I turned the "Idle time before hanging up" to never. Also turned off the "IP header compression" "Enable hardware flow control" "Enable modem error control" "Enable modem compression"

Have T-Mobile unlimited data plan. Any ideas?

That is news John. My instructions are and remain for the original 42 OS, which I am still using.

So are you saying that later OS's need a different string? If so, I will update my OP to include such information. I better do that in the event people rely on my OP to set the PC up.

Yeah, I couldn't get mine to work without the "IP". It's been so long since I've used the .42 that I don't even remember what I had before. It could be a product of the Desktop Manager version, too. I couldn't tell you.

I get a lot of error msg too when trying to connect but I just ignore it and try again like once or twice and then it connects. I have noticed though that the connection seems to die after like 30 min and then I have to try again later and all is fine again. Any ideas why this happens?

Default Warning To Cingular / At&t Users! - 06-20-2007, 04:14 AM

Tethering is NOT included in your BlackBerry Data Plan.

Without a Tethering Plan, you will be charged $0.01/Kb for data. If you think that sounds cheap, connecting and browsing to Google cost me $0.19! You can EASILY run up a bill of several hundred dollars!

The only Tethering Plan (since AT&T took over) is $74.99/Month for Unlimited Tethering Data! Cingular used to have a 4Mb plan for around $35.

Data plans with "Air Cards" are a bit less expensive, but barely.

Excellent reminder and warning.

While I mention many times in various posts that T-Mobile is the only carrier with the unlimited $20 data plan, which includes tethering, many members do not realize this. And this is further restricted because my understanding is that T-Mo's $20 unlimited data plan applies only to U.S. customers.

I have pity for those people who fire up their Pearls as modems, surf with reckless abandon, only to find $500 for modem use on their next bills.

And from what I hear about carriers other than T-Mo, the arrogant CSRs are going to delete those charges from the bill because one did not understand how things worked.

Wirelessly posted (BB 8860: BlackBerry8100/4.2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100 UP.Browser/5.0.3.3 UP.Link/5.1.2.1)

If you have a data plan with TMobile you can use your phone as a modem with no extra charges. I use mine all the time in airports. Works pretty good.

Search the Forum, this has been talked about in many, many threads. People have commented on how long they have stayed connected without extra charge.

And I have mentioned on how unlimited may not mean unlimited should T-Mo believe you are abusing the unlimited feature [maybe if you stayed hooked up "as a modem" 24 hours a day for three months straight].

As John said, if you have T-Mobile's $19.99 unlimited Blackberry Data Plan, you can use that to tether the Pearl to the notebook or desktop PC and surf away without extra charge. Clear enough?

Does anybody know how to set this up with Vista? I find the spot to enter the new command but the text entry is blocked. Any way to get beyond that? Some of the responders in this thread said that they made it work with Vista. Any help would be appreciated....

I had a lot of problems and spent a lot of time getting my BB modem to work. I had to uninstall my Desktop Manager and reinstall it from the disk that came with my phone. Then I finally starting getting encouraging results. Thanks for all the help, Dave

Try turning UAC (User Access Control) off. Run MSCONFIG - in the Tools tab there's one utility that will turn it off, and one that will turn it on. A reboot is required for the change to take affect.

If that doesn't help and if you installed DM without Right Clicking on the installer and selecting Run As Administrator, uninstall it and reinstall it that way.

I don't get an option to select the port, on "Create New Connection". I'm good through this step:

Go to <Start> Menu

Select <Control Panel>

Select <Network Connections>

Select <File> from the drop down menu

Select <Create a New Connection>

Select <Network Connection Wizard>

Select <Connect to the Internet>

Select <Set Up My Connection Manually>

Select <Connect Using a Dial Up Modem>

Then it ask to name it, then phone number, then user name and pw, then finish.

What am I missing? tia

Thx
Low

Firstly, many thanks for the great instructions and help here. But alas, I have a problem only one other has had but no solution:
I connect without any problem, but when I open the browser it says no connection to net. The icon in the system test says connected. ??
Many thanks,

Default Pearl Reboot While Tethered - 07-11-2007, 04:58 PM

First, Thanks for all the great information. I use my pearl to connect and everything works fine for about 30 minutes. Then it seems that if my Pearl is fully charged the unit reboots and will continue to reboot every 10 minutes or so.

If use it when the battery is low I can go for hours while connected. Anyone else having these issues?

Some of you may have heard about three weeks ago that SPRINT terminated about 1000 customers accounts because in Sprint's opinion they were calling customer support too often or abusing their accounts.

sprint cancels customer - Google Search

Aside from how stupid SPRINT was for doing that [all the media and news channels featured the headline "SPRINT cancels customer accounts"], what SPRINT was relying on was the same terms that are in T-Mobile's Terms of Service.

What I had posted before applies. T-Mobile's terms of service have buried in the provisions the statement that you give the right to T-Mobile to cancel your account for the stated reasons or if in their opinion you are abusing the account. One defined abuse is using the data plan to excess.

But like I also said, I don't think T-Mobile would consider 24/7 use for 30 days straight abuse. But I don't know at what point they might send you a warning letter that you are using your Pearl as a modem "too much."

I do think they would warn you first before terminating your account. However, the good news is that with all the free bad publicity SPRINT got for canceling only 1000 accounts, I can't imagine other carriers will be chomping at the bit to terminate contracts.

So relax, T-Mo's $20 unlimited data plan remains intact. If anything, T-Mo might raise the rate someday, but it's an attractive feature when going with T-Mo, so I doubt a rate increase will be coming any time soon. Of course, now that I have said that, a rate increase will be announced next week.

This is an excerpt directly from the T-Mobile website regarding the use of a mobile as a modem for your laptop. From what I understand, T-Mobile encourages the use of your phone as a laptop modem. They even help you configure it if you want for no charge (link at bottom of the post).

Set up your phone as a wireless modem to access T-Mobile Internet!

If you are a T-Mobile Internet customer and wish to set up your mobile phone as a wireless modem for your laptop, the T-Mobile Wireless Configurator can help! The Configurator is designed to help you identify various options for using T-Mobile phones and data products with popular devices and laptop computers, so that you can connect to the Internet, browse e-mail and access information. The Configurator provides guidance on connecting your favorite device or laptop with phones that are compatible with T-Mobile Internet.

NOTE: You must subscribe to T-Mobile Internet before you can begin using your phone as a wireless modem. T-MobileWeb does not provide the same access as T-Mobile Internet; however, T-MobileWeb is included with a T-Mobile Internet subscription.

T-Mobile Wireless Configurator
You are right. In fact, back in October 06 when we were all talking about use of the Pearl as a modem, I specifically mentioned that people having problems connecting should not be afraid to contact T-Mo because 1) T-Mo is fully aware of such use; and 2) tech support actually will help in getting one up and running.

The issue/question remains, however, is T-Mo's unlimited data plan truly "unlimited?" Back then I answered the question by referring to T-Mo's Terms of Service [even posted a pic of the page] that T-Mo reserved the right to terminate one's contract if in T-Mo's opinion a user was abusing his or her plan.

But like I said, I think if one was using his or her Pearl as a modem to excess [as unilaterally decided by T-Mo] one would most likely first get a warning letter to curb such use; and 2) that one's use would have to be pretty excessive.

In fact, I question if one left their Pearl as a modem on 24/7 for three or four months straight, I dunno if T-Mo would take notice.

There was one member who said he could not get DSL or broadband where he lived, so he was planning on using his Pearl as a modem full time [via T-Mo]. He never reported back that there was a problem, but he would be a good source to see if T-Mo ever contacted him about excessive usage.

Really though, in these days of DSL for $15 monthly, I don't think there are too many people using their Pearls as modems to excess or as their sole connection to the Net. And I don't think there are that many people using Pearls as modems on the road. If there are, it's sporadic use and within T-Mo's definition of reasonable use.

Thank you SanFrancisco and all the others who contributed to bringing this write-up to the forums. This works great for me, and will make my airport layovers much more bearable. It also helps me justify the $20 monthly cost a little more, at least in my own mind.... ;)
