I can connect (TMo) just fine, but some quirky reason my 'connection' is very sensitive. I have to tether my Pearl and then leave it in an upright position without touching it, in order to enjoy uninterrupted connection after dialing in. The moment I accidentally knock the phone over or even just lift it up to move it to another spot, the phone 'loses' its USB/dialup connection pretty much immediately. Anyone else experience this weird problem, or do I have a bad USB cable/mini-USB socket?

so what happens when you've followed all the steps correctly and "standard modem" is not listed under the modems tab in Phone and Modem Options ?

I dunno about Vista inasmuch as I am staying away from that can of worms OS for at least the next year, if not longer. I have too many excellent programs that are no longer made and I fear they won't work on Vista.
For me, asking a Vista question is like asking something about Macs, don't know anything about it.
Sorry.
It's a long shot, but since T-Mo provides tech support on tethering with WinXP, maybe they have some info on Vista? Since you are with T-Mo, give em a call. All they can say is they don't know squat, like me.

that is amazing, this phone is amazing
it's slow, REAL slow for me, but i'm at work in the basement with 2 bars of service (maybe)
att needs to get to it with providing much better service for those of us that live in the country
ps.
i made it work in vista also, the only tricky part is to click 'change settings' in the general tab of the modem properties to put in the string for your provider (why they won't let you put it in there to start with is beyond me)

Stonefeet, can you provide a line-by-line post in here where you tell those members with Vista exactly what you did to make this work on a PC with Vista. Would be helpful.

it's really exactly the same as the directions provided in the first post of this thread except for the thing i mentioned above.
but since i'm bored @ work
click the start button and go to connect to
then click set up a connection or network
select connect to internet
click setup connection anyway (that's what it says on mine since i'm already connected to a network)
select dial up
choose standard modem
put *99# in the dial up phone number box and leave everything else the way it is
click connect eventhough it won't work then let it do its thing and close the box
go to control panel-> phone and modem options
go to modems tab and select standard modem and hit properties
in the general tab you'll see a change settings box, click it
and in the advanced tab put in your carriers string
mine was +cgdcont=1,"IP","wap.cingular"
ok all the way out of that and open desktop manager and wait until phone says it's connected
now go to connect to from the start menu and connect to the connection you setup earlier
that's what worked for me, anything beyond that i really have no idea

Man, I am not sure what I did wrong. Brand new laptop running Vista Enterprise with the Dell BT 355 module. I can pair up and synch with DM via BT with no problems - same with USB, no issues synching. I do not get the standard modem listed under modems, and I do not get the Dial Up Networking option in the Bluetooth Manager. So - No tethering at all right now. I have the current phone OS, current DM (4.2 SP2), DM is running... I do have several devices that show no drivers installed in Device Manager - 2 listings for Bluetooth Peripheral Device and 2 for Unknown Device. I have the proper listings for the COM ports though. Any ideas? Any help is very much appreciated.

awesome little feature. loving it so far.
one thing- you only need desktop manager open to dial the internet. once you are connected through your pearl you can close DM and retain your connection.
i'm a bit OCD and don't like unnecessary apps open.

With VISTA? -
10-03-2007, 12:21 AM
I have a BB pearl, which I am trying to set up as a modem via USB cable. I have cingular/ATT for my phone service. I am unable to get this set up on Vista, and wondered if any one has had any luck with this?
Thanks!

On T-Mobile, instead of
Quote:
|
+cgdcont=1,,"wap.voicestream.com"
|
which only gives me a GPRS connection, I use
Quote:
|
+cgdcont=1,,"internet2.voicestream.com"
|
which gives me an EDGE connection.
(internet2 is the T-Mobile connection for unsupported devices, and is part of the EDGE network)

Error 734 nojoy! -
03-16-2008, 09:01 AM
Excellent instructions, thanks, (8120, o2 contract, BIS)
I followed them to the letter (used cut and paste to ensure correct strings etc)
But I just get the error '734, The PPP link control protocol was terminated'
Do I have to be with BES for this to work?
Thanks
PS I have gone onto the microsoft website and gone through the troubleshooting, but the error 734 continues.

This method works great when I'm on the road and have no web access or lousy access. Once setup it's easy to connect and disconnect. Follow above instructions or those @ blackberry FAQ site.

I tried this about a year ago. Unfortunately, I was roaming at the time. Had a $5000 bill show up at my door for 3 hours worth of browsing on the internet from my laptop.
Be warned about the roaming fees if you do this.

Wirelessly posted
I get around 115kbs with my cell and laptop.
My problem is that once I disconnect my bb from my laptop, I have no browsing capabilities. I have to do a battery pull to get it back to working again.
Is this normal?

It will, but you have to pay extra for Verizon's tethering plan. Verizon charges you for everything.
