I am not sure what exactly this does. Is this just a way to creat a playlist on the Pearl? Or is this a way to store more MP3's on the Pearl because it takes up less space? Sorry, I just got confused reading it. Thanks!

Thumbs up What is the big deal on playing more than 1 song at a time?

I've been playing more than 1 song since I first loaded mp3s on my Pearl. I just created folders (by artist) under the Media Card/Blackberry/music/ subdirectory on my 1 gig MicroSD card, and dragged the songs from artist mp3 directories I keep on my computer. A lot of my songs have the album art and all, and it shows up on the Pearl. When I press the menu key when a subdirectory is highlighted, I have options to play all or play folder. In a subdirectory, they both do the same thing. Press menu again, and you have the following options:

Prev track
Next track
Replay
Repeat
Shuffle
Show Playlist

I didn't know that everyone with a Pearl didn't know about this.

I guess he though that you can only play one song at a time. pbbjr explained it well enough how to play whole folders or even all songs on the card. But, the how to create a playlist through WMP info is very useful. Thanks

I guess this is the part I don't understand,

"I just put 178 songs on my 1gig card and it only took up 17.4k of space compared to 4-8mb per mp3!!!!! "

I could tell he made a typo and did not proofread his post, how else to explain that he is the only one on the planet able to compress 178 MP3's [averaging 4-5 MB each] into a 17.4K file.

That would truly be a feat and he would have by now sold the technology for billions.

Might be a heads up to the rest of his "how to" post.

Are you sure you can play the songs too- without your BB connected to your PC?
From the size, seems like only 'shortcuts' probably got created.

Or, just maybe, the 'decimal' got misplaced.

It seems like he just put the playlist file on his BB and not the actual songs.

Default m3u files: a different way to make them...

An m3u file just tells a mp3 playback device two things about an mp3 song, the songs filename and the path to play the mp3 relative to the m3u file itself... Technically you don't really need WMP to generate the m3u file if you know where your files are and you have a text editor, just save the file with the m3u extension (tip in Notepad use quotes like this "savedfile.m3u")...

Heres an m3u file in Notepad that plays three songs for me:

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:Patricia Barber - Mythologies - 03 - Pygmalion.mp3
Patricia Barber - Mythologies - 03 - Pygmalion.mp3

#EXTINF:Patricia Barber - Mythologies - 01 - The Moon.mp3
Patricia Barber - Mythologies - 01 - The Moon.mp3

#EXTINF:Patricia Barber - Mythologies - 02 - Morpheus.mp3
Patricia Barber - Mythologies - 02 - Morpheus.mp3

The short, nine line file above assumes that the m3u file is in the same directory as the mp3 files themselves. But what if you wanted to jump around to sub-directories? Just add a path to the front of the filename like this:

#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:Patricia Barber - Mythologies - 03 - Pygmalion.mp3
subfolder/Patricia Barber - Mythologies - 03 - Pygmalion.mp3

#EXTINF:Patricia Barber - Mythologies - 01 - The Moon.mp3
Patricia Barber - Mythologies - 01 - The Moon.mp3

#EXTINF:Patricia Barber - Mythologies - 02 - Morpheus.mp3
Patricia Barber - Mythologies - 02 - Morpheus.mp3

Now the file assumes that the Moon and Morpheus songs above are still next to the m3u file. The Pygmalion file is now located in a subdirectory one level below called "subfolder". Two subfolders would look like this:

subfolder1/subfolder2/mp3song.mp3

Using this trick you can have the m3u file jump all over your mp3 collection and give a more eclectic list of music to listen to.

Btw... Yes, ktorres1120 probably looked at the tiny text file size of the m3u file. Also I found that pushing the 4 or 6 keys make the player skip forward or back thru the m3u songlist without having to use the menu key 1st. Also, also... Winamp will generate m3u files for you too; load up songs in the playlist and press Crtl+S. Hope this helps or clarifys... /Cie
