Default Unlocked 8100 question

Please Login to Remove!

Hi all- I have searched the forums, but cannot find the answer to my question.

I am planning to buy an 'unlocked' 8100 from eBay. A current seller with a great 'Buy it Now' price and 100% feedback says the phone IS 'unlocked' BUT, for some reason, he has to do "something else" for it to be used with Cingular "BIS" and will charge $50 more.

Is this a scam? If a phone is truly 'unlocked', it should be programmable through Cingular's BlackBerry BIS setup web page, which pushes the correct 'service books' to the phone, right?

The only other issues I've read about is that if the phone is locked to a previous BES server, it won't like Cingular's SIM, but the old server data can be reset fairly simply by the user.

I just don't want to buy an 'unlocked' phone and then have to pay more to get it truly 'unlocked'!

Thanks for any and all advice.

Once unlocked there is nothing else needed for it to be used on a bis. I have helped several hundred customers use their 8100s on Cingular with no issues

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/2.0 (compatible; MSIE 3.02; Windows CE; PPC; 240x320) BlackBerry8100/4.2.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

Funny thing is that it costs $50 to unlock it from GSMphonesource. Selling it as unlocked upfront sounds like bait.

Thanks for the replies. The ebay seller just emailed this: "Unlock means you can use this device as a phone..." "...the data feature will not work unless I further process it."

The "further process" is what he wants and extra $50 for. That "further proccess" must be setting up the phone with Cingular's "service books", which can be done via Cingular's BB web site. There's nothing else you need to "unlock" once the phone is truly "unlocked", correct?

I think I'll buy the phone from someone else. Though he may actually be honest and mean well, I'm a little nervous now. Plus, his good price is now on par with other sellers that have feedback from 8100 buyers who have confirmed they are happy.

Some people are just too shady. I'd buy from someone more reputable.

It sounds to me he just put "unlock" on his auction just to get people to bid on the phone.

I think the $50 "further process" is to actually unlock the phone.

Exactly what I said above. I just got mine unlocked for $50. Using GSMphonesource was very smooth.

I decided to buy direct from gsmps. "Unlocked" 8100's are selling on eBay for a few bucks less, but gsmps is reputable and will back up his sale. The $25 or so extra is worth the peace of mind!!
