Please Login to Remove!

What's the deal, I was telling myslef that this is it for me this is the last bb I will get because it does it All. But then I got it and it has no recorder. Will this come with the software in the future or will I have to get another versions? Does anyone know about this?

You are asking for alot.

No, it does not have it and I don't think they will ever make one.

There's lot more still camera phones than there are camcorder phones.

Besides, if it is really is important, I will just use the real camcorder.

Ditto, not a big issue for me thought but would've been nice. My only wish list in order of most wanted is better battery, track wheel instead the ball and better camera with bonus of vid recording.

my treo 600 didnt have this, but there was a 3rd party app that allowed for it. Give it time... it will get here.

If you look at the specs for the 8800 and new blackberrys comming out they support video recording so I think its just a matter of upgrading the BB's OS to handle such a thing. I do see it happening withen the year from RIM. They rushed this 8100 out the doors so fast they didnt have a chance to add that many "cool" features to it. I'm sure it will come along with live streaming video from the web... I say by next summer you will have your wish

It is simply a software issue because the lens is already on the phone. Subject to the below, I am sure they will come out with an update/patch.

I opined about three weeks ago that maybe RIM is seeing what people think about a video camera and determining if there is a market for it. If there is one, they will put it in the Pearl, call it the 8100v and include it as a reason for all of us to pay for an upgrade.

Then again, it could have been the rush to market precluded it being on the current model. But I don't think this is the reason since adding recording capability is not all that hard to program. Plus, RIM supposedly took three years to develop the Pearl.

Guess we will see what RIM does.

I for one would not be interested in upgrading simply to get a low-end video camera.

Another issue may simply be that the processor in the Pearl might not be good enough to do video with. The refresh time on the camera when just moving it around set for 640x480 mode seems rather choppy, so the odds are fairly good that you wouldn't get enough power to record even the camera-phone-standard 288x252 or whatever it is. Video encoding is an order of magnitude more complicated than decoding for playback, so just because we can supposedly watch videos on the Pearl doesn't mean it can record.

My old Treo 650 did video and while it wasn't a "must have" feature, it definitely was nice. Even if it's low quality video, just being able to take a quick vid clip and email it is a great consumer feature. Isn't the point of the Pearl to be a consumer-oriented model?

the pearl has the same processer that is comming out in the INDIGO if you look at both spec sheets both BB's carry a Intel Xscale 312mhz processer so the processer is up for the task. again i think it was just a matter of RIM pushing this model out the door so fast..

Well all of this info is very interesting, I agree its not an important feature but is nice to have. I also hope that this is an OS issue. Also I wish the battery lasted a little longer but, hey all and all I'm satisfied with this.

It could be an OS upgrade issue. If that is all that needs to be done, expect a patch in the next few months or maybe even a third party coming out with it.

If it's my 8100v strategy, I don't see that coming out for at least 9 months. RIM would not want to piss off all of us who just bought the Pearl, so to speak. Plus, it would have to have other upgrades besides video.

Update: 8100v will be the name for the Pearl in Italy.

Could be a camera module thing as well. Some modules do preprocessing so the phone processor doesnt - they may have used a differenct camera setup
