Cool Pharos 360 GPS with Bluetooth Adapter and Pearl - Marriage Made in Heaven

Please Login to Remove!

Some time ago, Microsoft was bundling Streets and Trips with the USB version of the Pharos 360 GPS receiver for less than $100 - it was a great deal back then... but lots has happened since - and I hadn't used the receiver in about a year.

When I picked up my Pearl the other day, and took a look at the Maps app on the Pearl, my first thought was that I'd hide it from my apps list because I wasn't going to use it (having to spent hundreds of dollars on a new BT GPS was going to be a burden)... then, it struck me... Pharos makes a Bluetooth module that you can pop the 360 into for only $79.00!

A run to CompUSA over my lunch hour, and 5 minutes in the car later, my Pearl paired ridiculously easily to the bluetooth enabled Pharos 360, and I was navigating with aplomb. No settings... just worked, ala Apple products. I've had a few GPS systems over the years (PDA based) and always rejected them because the maps were outdated, battery power sucked, etc - but this application that RIM has included into the Pearl for *FREE* is absolutely amazing.

Even if you aren't navigationally impaired, and don't see a burning need for a GPS system - you will be so pleasantly geeked out with this combination that you MUST go out and get what you need to use this functionality.

Personally, I'm just plain floored. About the only thing I'd like to see improved is the speed with which the application runs (it is a bit laggy) - and the ability to show landmarks (gas stations, etc.)...

Geeked and Stoked,
Stac

I am trying your gps pick + bluetooth dock option but it does not work out of the box. It says to charge for 2-3 hours but even after a cpl of hrs charging and hooked up to the ac the Pearl cannot find it.
Any ideas why??

I have the same setup, however i purchased them together (the dock and the receiver) - i didn't understand that the dock IS the bluetooth device. so after i charged it, i pulled the receiver from the dock and attempted to pair it with my pearl. it didn't work.. i read and learned that in order to use the receiver with bluetooth, it has to stay in the dock. so, i plugged it back into the dock, turned it on (the bluetooth light turned on) - i searched for devices from my pearl and it found the gps unit, i typed in the 12345678 password and it was paired up. started up the maps program and clicked 'start gps' and it worked like a charm.

so, just in case you had the same confusion as me - the receive needs to stay plugged into the dock (you can disconnect the charger cable of course) and then it should work wonderfully.

I think I may have a defective unit. Did the Blue light in the NOSE of the adapter blink like it is supposed to when in search mode??

I got the general blue light on around the chip to come on when inserted but not the one in the nose. It was intermittent when I pushed hard at a few places like there was a short or something.

Thats what I thought. I got it off ebay and the seller offered to send another unit to me as replacement.

Fingers crossed.

How fast is the response rate of picking up the signal? I considered the BT-359 from Cingular after I bought this one but for some reason I can't establish a bluetooth connection at all with it.

See my thread here -

Bluetooth Error on BT-359 GPS connection. Please Help!

ANY IDEAS???

It take mine about 45 seconds to sync with the satellites...

you know, i don't even notice a delay at all. i use telenav and it always just seems to be 'ready'. with the maps program the drawing of the screens was slower but it also always seemed 'ready' - don't know if this answers your question and since there isn't a display that says 'please why while picking up a signal' - i can't quantify the answer.
