One thing, just a shot, since the SIM card has address book functions [one can keep phone number contacts on the SIM], maybe the SIM is not fully seated. Probably not the issue, but you never know. So reseat the SIM.
And I am not aware, but maybe there is some other setting elsewhere on the Pearl that says to "wipe history" and that is also getting rid of the call log?
