Default Faceplate question:

Please Login to Remove!

Hello,

I just signed up here to learn more info about the BB Pearl and I almost bought an unlocked BlackBerry Pearl today (since I'm with Cingular) but first I decided to do some research. I came accross this forum and learned that Cingular would be coming out with their version of the BB Pearl sometime soon. So I had a thought. Since the Cingular version seems to be so much uglier, do you think the faceplate (and possibly the keypad) from a T-Mobile BB Pearl would be able to be swapped with Cingulars version? I just like how T-Mobiles looks so much better. Any info is greatly appreciated....

probably not megan. youre probably going to be stuck with what they give you. maybe a skin or leather cover would help. what does the cingular one look like anyway?

I read that there are going to be two versions of the Cing phone, one with a camera, the other without. Not sure how accurate that info is.

I also heard that the "ugly" model [as you say] is not accurate, that it is going to look just like T-Mo's. Don't know how accurate that info is either. Seems that lots of people are just talking.

Are you talking about the post that showed the 8100c with a silver band in the lower front as discussed here?

BlackBerry Pearl 8100c and Samsung SGH-i607 coming to Cingular? - Engadget

Anyway, seems you have a little time to look into it [next month or per a Cingular press briefing, not until 1st quarter of 2007].

Maybe you can contact a Cingular rep who will give you some inside info. I am sure they know about it since they probably have had sales training on it.

Hi Sanfrancisco (I live right near you) anyway yes I am talking about the one in that link. It's not TOO ugly, but I just thought since everything would probably be the same size/shape just a different color, that maybe they could be swapped. I know I am thinking WAY ahead. I read the same rumors that you posted. I think I will call Cingular tomorrow just to see what I can get out of them.

And perhaps a better one: Cingular branded BlackBerry Pearl pictures leaked - Engadget Mobile

As for the release, there will be only one version released on or before 12/11. With camera. But, as noted in the past, the same ability to disable the camera with an IT policy will exist.

As to the question presented in the OP, why not just get an Unlocked Tmo one if you're looking to change the faceplate? The guts inside are going to be the same...

Well I was told (and this may not be true) that if I get an unlocked T-mo one, I won't be able to get ringtones or use the internet or mail functions with it. (If it is true, it probably only applies until Cingular releases their version and then their tech support would be able to change my settings to make it work). There are also rumors floating around that Cingular will have the Push To Talk function on their version, and I would love that.

believe me you can get everything with an unlocked pearl that you will be able to get with cingular pearl. of course cingular will tell you it wont works, they say that for all devices because they want you to buy theirs.

with the faceplate issue, the whole housing would have to be changed. i'm sure it is do-able as with all the devices. i transfered an 8700c to 8707v the only thing is, these housing will probably be hard to find.

just enable your blackberry data plan on cingular and it does not matter which device you have you will get all the features.

So I'd be able to use the internet and download ringtones with an unlocked BB Pearl? It was a friend of mine that works at a Cingular store that told me it wouldn't, but who knows... she could very well be lying. I just assumed that since Cingular doesn't have this device available (yet) that when I went to download ringtones especially I'd have a problem. I know I wouldn't be able to download ringtones from Cingular's site, because it asks what device you have, and BlackBerry Pearl 8100 won't be on the list! I am guessing I'd just have to go through other sites, but still I got the impression it wouldn't work.

The PTT feature is just a software issue, and Jibi has already posted a modified platform.alx file that will enable that feature for those using unlocked T-Mobile Pearl's on Cingular network.

Interesting. Too bad I passed up on a good deal for a T-mobile one...oh well, I guess I'll just wait just to see how the final version comes out, and then I'll decide which version to get. Thanks for the info guys!
