Ok i am trying to encode a simpsons episode...its an avi file so when it encodes i got the .AVI extension so i changed that to small so it was "simpsons.avi.avi" that didnt work then i tried it as just "simpsons.avi" no luck...what am i doing wrong i have read and re-read the sticky and just keep getting lost...Please help!

The Pearl does NOT play movies that simply have the avi extension. They have to be encoded to play on the Pearl.

There are different encodings for AVI files, in other words, even though three files might all have AVI extensions, the encoding can be different on all three.
I have been taking episodes off my Simpsons DVD and copying them to my Pearl with no problems.
First, I use DVD Decrypter to decrypt the DVD episode. I use the stream processing to select the English 6.1 audio track. I found that if I didn't do that then I got a Spanish or French audio track.
Then I use Mplayer to make the .avi file with the following settings:
