The Pearl does NOT play movies that simply have the avi extension. They have to be encoded to play on the Pearl.

Here is the thread where discuss a $15 program that will convert your videos to play on the Pearl.

Also, here is a low budget [aka crappy] video I put together to demo the program in action.

There are different encodings for AVI files, in other words, even though three files might all have AVI extensions, the encoding can be different on all three.

I have been taking episodes off my Simpsons DVD and copying them to my Pearl with no problems.

First, I use DVD Decrypter to decrypt the DVD episode. I use the stream processing to select the English 6.1 audio track. I found that if I didn't do that then I got a Spanish or French audio track.

Then I use Mplayer to make the .avi file with the following settings:

mencoder -vf scale=240:180 -alang en e:\video2\video_ts\VTS_05_1.VOB -o e:\simp_2.2.avi -ovc lavc -oac mp3lame -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg4:vbitrate=240 -lameopts br=64:vol=9

(replace a:\video2\... with the source file directory and name and e:\simp_2.2.avi with the destination directory and name)

Works like a charm.
