maybe its a numeric page the person is leaving you, instead of voice mail

dude. are you on rogers in canada? if so then i already know the reason. you have on your account a new option from rogers called "who called". its a feature that sends you an SMS of the number of anyone who calls you when you're not there. the cool thing is that if you're phone is off or you lose reception, when you get back on the network you'll get an sms saying who called "while you weren't available" EVEN IF THEY DONT LEAVE VOICEMAIL OR JUST HANG UP AFTER A RING OR TWO.

the downside however is that every missed call you have will also generate this sms message.

if you dont like it i HIGHLY suggest you call customer service, because this option ISNT FREE! so you're obviously paying for it without knowing!

but then again theres also the possibility you have a package of options and it just so happens that "who called" is in your package and you may need the other features minus the "who called" option.

either way. calls *611 and they'll take it from there. its the only way.

Here's what you do. Press 'send' to open up your call log then >>Click Menu >>Options >>Call Logging >> Select 'None'

My phone was doing that too and that fixed it for me. Let me know if it works for you.

I don't think that the phone is actually receiving a text message. I'm pretty sure that it just logs the phone call in the messages area (like a text message). When you set it to stop logging the calls the messages disappear.
