Thumbs up Some Questions for the Experts..... - 11-14-2006, 12:15 AM

I am new to the Blackberry world. I have been resistant to go to BB's because of the size of the older BB's so I used two devices. I had a cell phone that synced with Outlook for contacts and I used a PDA in my car for my calendar. I am in sales and constantly scheduling appointments and on the phone.

I saw an opportunity with this phone to eliminate the PDA out of my life. I do have some questions though:
  • Can I make one number under a contact as the default? My last phone allowed me to have multiple numbers and one was the default so when I pressed "send" it would not make me click again to pick the number I want to dial. One more click while driving just makes it more difficult. Let's face it, most of us use one number to call our contacts and then if we get reach them on that number we go to the next.
  • Color coding on the calendar view? I color code every appointment on Outlook and my PDA would show those colors via third-party software. I travel often so the travel required color coding and also color coding important meetings mean a lot to me. I would be willing to purchase software if this is available.
  • Is there a way to increase the text size for the Dimension today screen? I increased the size on all the other text under options/screen/keyboard but it didn't seem to effect the dimension today screen.
  • How do I set up ringtone ID's for my contacts? I assign ringtones to different customers so I know if I need to run to the phone or not!
  • How do I set up my bluetooth headset to auto connect when I power up my phone? I use a Nokia BH-800 earpiece and every headset I have ever had would connect on phone power up.
  • Is there another way to pull up contacts without having to hold down the "send" button? Again this comes down to ease of use while driving.
  • Is there a third party software for contacts that will alternate the color on each contact for easier scrolling. Also it would be nice if it would streamline the contact details page.

I know I just posted a ton of questions so I just wanted to say thank you in advance for some answers.

First of all, welcome to the BlackBerryForums.com. I don't have all the answers to your questions, but here goes....

There is currently no way to set a particular phone number or email as default when a contact has multiple.

Not that I know of. Maybe someone else does.

Nope. You already changed the font size in the only place available.

Go into Profiles and configure a new exception.

After added the new Bluetooth device select it and edit the device properties. Set Trusted Device to Yes.

See Stinsonddog's BlackBerry Tips for tons of keyboard shortcuts.

You might want to check out PocketDay, it has various calendar and Today Screen options. Some you might like and to fit your needs. I tried it on my Pearl and it works. See below pic.

Link here PocketDay

As for contacts/address book, you can set up the hot keys on the right and left of the Pearl to do whatever you want [default on right is camera, left to lock keyboard].

I have the one on the right set to open the address book.

Left to set profiles [sounds, vibrate, etc.]

Default Thanks for the replies - 11-14-2006, 10:09 AM

Thanks for the information. I realize that there are going to be compromises with going from two devices to one but I did figure out how to sync through bluetooth though!

d_fisher - You forgot to mention that the phone have VOICE COMMANDS!

dentalrep - You can use the voice commands to call people. So if one of your contacts have multiple phone numbers in there, you can say, for example, "Call Joe Doe Mobile".

I never used PocketDay but I will take SanFrancisco advice. That is a good program. I heard positive reviews on it.

What OS are you using on the smartphone? Please vote! http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1437055
