Default My 8100 is out of memory - 12-01-2006, 04:04 PM

I have migrated from a 8700 into a 8100. I had half memory free in my 8700 (32MB).
I just plug in the SIM, requested a BES activation..... fine!! Everything works but only 3MB free to start. Usually my 8100 gets out of memory and incoming mail folder automatically gets empty (I assume due to lack of memory).
Properties shows that 0 free memory is available, so I reset (removing the battery) for geting 3 MB.

What can I do? I have less apps? Is there anyway to manage and improve memory? Is this a bug?

Thanks

Welcome to the forums!

What 3rd party apps have you loaded? Be specific....

OS v4.2 (installed on the Pearl) takes up more space than v4.1. As John suggested, what 3rd party apps do you have installed? Might have to remove some. Are you taking a lot of pictures or did you load some music? You can get a MicroSD card and move them there. This will free up space on the onboard memory.

Remember, please try searching first!

Need a screenshot? ... Like JavaLoader?
Try using BBscreen .....Use JL_Cmder!
or BBScreenShooter!

Default 3rd party apps installed - 12-02-2006, 04:55 AM

I have installed a dictionary (MSDict) and Mobile Sudoku.

Anyhow, when I enter in Status and browse the databases sizes, the total size is 615K.

I am considering to make a complete reset and start from scratch. How can I reset my 8100 to initial configuration?

Regards.

P.D. I have a SD card, but in any case I haven't loaded yet any pictures or music

Thanks

One easy thing you can do to get more memory on the device is to delete the support for unnecessary languages and characters (korean, semetic). Go to options, advanced, applications, and delete the languages you don't need.

I'm curious if the OP solved the problem. One of the questions I have as I ponder the Pearl from 8700 is whether I can load as many apps. Today I have:

Opera Mini
Google Maps
GMail
Berry 411
probably about 6 games (of which I only play like 1)
Yahoo messenger
BBWeather
a few ringtones
a few pictures/wallpapers

I think part of the problem MAY be MSDICT - not sure if he is running with local dictionaries or not, but that can take a LOT of space. I have lots of apps on my 8100 (also came from an 8700), and I have plenty of space, but recently purchased MSDICT, and cannot fit it into memory - I'll have to purchase a microSD card.

I am experiencing the same problem. I first noticed it because my calls log and emails were being automatically deleted so I checked the memory (file free = 0). I have very little installed and can only guess that the mms pictures I've been sending and videos I've been downloading have had an effect (i.e., even though I don't save the videos, maybe they are cached but not properly deleted automatically when file space runs low). Or maybe there's a memory leak, who knows. All I know is pulling the battery freed up 16MB.

I think there might be a major problem with this.

If MSDICT does not support external memory cards in BBs, then getting a microSD card for your 8100 is not going to solve your problem. But, at least you can move your pictures and put a lot of mp3s in your microSD.

Do you have additional languages installed on the Pearl? They take up a ton of memory.

Default Some clues - 12-04-2006, 03:45 AM

Dear colleagues,

Based on your suggestions and experience, it's possible to recover 15 MB of free memory that it's enough for having an stable status (otherwise, as mentioned, your incoming mailbox and phone calls register will be empty).

These are my suggestions:
a) Delete the BB demo video (2 MB) as it's installed in the main memory
b) Delete the support for languages you will never use (around 5 MB in my case)
c) I have also reduced the Memory reserved for Images from 10 MB to 2 MB (under Options in the Media menu).

Regarding MSDict, I have not found how to install the dictionaries in the microSD card...

Regards

What about his log files. Wouldn't they transfer over from the other bb?

If I'm deleting languages, are there any that I wouldn't want to delete (assuming I'm really only going to be using it in US English)? What's currently there are (and I've already deleted a few):
*Input Support
**Afrikaans
**Danish
**Greek
**Swedish
**Portuguese
*Language and Input Support
**German
**English UK
**Spanish
**French

Also, if I delete the "Help" application, will there no longer be "Help" options in the menus, or will they still show up but cause errors?

Thanks.

Edit: Is there an easy way to tell how much space one entry in the "Applications" list (Options->Advanced->Applications) takes up?

Do you speak any of the languages? If you don't need those languages then delete them! Don't delete the Help application.

NJ...is there a specific reason not to delete the help application...other than not having the help application? I used to uncheck it from the DM on my 7100t and it never gave any problems and it did free up memory. Is there a reason not to do that on the Pearl? I have enough memory on the Pearl, so far, so I haven't removed it from my Pearl but was going to shortly.

So would it be safe to delete all of the languages under both those headings (as I don't see US English included)? Since I don't speak any of the languages (well, I suppose I can get by with UK English ), would there be any downsides for me at all in deleting them?

You can delete languages you don't use. If you go to Options >Language it will show you what language you are currently using and what's loaded on your device. Delete everything that isn't English/US English. When I look in mine that's all I have for options. I'm sure that will work for you too. If you have DM installed and the OS installed on your PC just plug in the BB, Open DM, run Application Loader and uncheck all the language support you're not using. If you decide to learn French one day you can go back and check it and have it back.

I'm only seeing applications I've installed in the Application Loader. There is a gray entry that says "Other required applications and libraries", but no detail or ability to uncheck them.

Edit: The application loader shows up as a wizard. If there's a more complete non-wizard version, please let me know how I get to it.

There are two options...

1. Delete directly from the BB. Go to Options >Applications and delete the modules (I have never had multi-language support loaded on my BB so I've never seen these loaded but am assuming that's where they'd be)

2. Download, and install to your PC, the OS for your BB from the link below. Then delete the vendor.xml file located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader. Then open desktop manager and run Application Loader again. It should recognize your software and you should be able to check and uncheck what you want and don't want.

How do you put applications on the media card? I don't see any options when installing them from the phone browser. Is it an option when installing from DM? Is there any way to move an installed application to the media card?

I've posted this in other threads, but it seems especially appropriate here. Plus, I've received a few PMs asking for help with this.

Mods break it into its own thread if you feel its deserving:

You can significantly increase the available memory by uninstalling various things from the Pearl. When I restart my Pearl, I have about 43 MB free, and I have 9 third party apps installed: Googletalk, Googlemaps, newsclip, spider solitaire, freecell, klondike, operamini, quickplayer, and RSAsecuretoken.

It's best to do this when upgrading the device to a new OS. For example, if you delete preloaded pictures (see step 5, below), they still show up as 0k files in the pictured folder. If you delete them when you reinstall the entire OS, they won't.

Not all of these steps need be followed, picking and choosing will work too. Where I say to delete a file below, it's probably better just to copy it into a new folder so that you can restore it if necessary. Whenever you want to implement the changes, simply run the apploader.

Back up your device first

(1) If you have a media card, go into the options in the media app and change "reserved pictures memory" to 0M. Even if you don't have a card, consider lowering the number to conserve memory. Savings = up to 10 MB.

(2) Delete the unnecessary language files. You can do it through options> advanced>applications, but the better, cleaner way to do it is through the apploader. When a new OS is installed on the PC (not the device) the .cod files are contained in the java folder at (for OS .69) program files/common files/research in motion/shared/loader files/8100-v4.2.0.69_P2.2.0.40.

There are approx. 400 files, if you only want english, delete any file with the following at the end of the file name: __pt, __pt_BR, __fr, __it, __de, __nl, __en_GB, __es, __es_MX, __ca, and __tr. Also delete all files with dynamic_ling (except for the English files). For os .69 there are a total of 186 language files totaling 12.4 MB that can be deleted in this manner. Plus, delete the .cod files for korean and semitic language support.

(3) Delete the .cod files with any themes (net_rim_theme_...) you don't use. BUT DO NOT DELETE THE ZEN THEME. By deleting the Cingular theme and the dimension icon theme I saved another MB.

(4) Delete the preloaded video, by deleting the .cod file: net_rim_bb_medialoader_video.cod. Savings = 2.4 MB.

(5) Delete the preloaded pictures by deleting the files: net_rim_bb_media_240x260_b.cod and net_rim_bb_media_100_240x260.cod. Savings = 3.5 MB.

(6) Delete the preloaded ringtones by deleting the file: net_rim_bb_profiles_tunes_tunebundles_tunes8700g.c od. Savings = 280k.

Total memory savings is about 30MB. If you don't use PTT on Cingular, delete those .cod files as well (they say ptt in them). If you don't play brickbreaker delete it. If you don't use the maps application delete it.

Keep in mind, however, that some strange things can happen when certain apps are deleted. For example, I deleted the memo pad and tasks on my 7130 and BBcorrector wouldn't work. It's probably best to follow these steps one at a time, so that you'll know which step to undo if a problem arises. Obviously, by messing with the OS files, you could turn your device into a nice Christmas tree ornament, and I take no responsibility if you do that. In discovering all of these steps, I bricked my device twice. However, I simply undid my previous step (i.e., restore some .cod files) reran the apploader and everything turned out fine.

I don't see how you can use apploader to delete files on the blackberry. Spandumster -- can you elaborate?

I use the desktop manager to uninstall the help files. Works fine.

Yes, the event log comes back. You can hide the logs but you can't stop the BB from logging.

I'm confused on how to delete files from the apploader. I went to my existing installation of the desktop manager/OS on my laptop and removed vendor.xml, but still don't get access to all of the files on the device.

The numbered themes refer to the vendor IDs. I'm not sure off the top of my head which id belongs to which vendor. I know that Cingular is 102 and T-Mobile is 100. If you search, there's probably a thread that lists the ids for each vendor.

I ended up going back to the original BlackBerry.alx file. I didn't really like any of the themes anyway. Thank you anyway. Hopefully soon I'll be able to make my own theme.

Im happy to report after using the suggestions here and editing the java folder in the c:\program files I was able to get rid of enough stuff to take my free mem from around 28meg to 44 meg. I was amazed and convinced I had deleted necessary stuff, but everything on the phone is working, from the phone itself to all emails, opera mini, gmail, google maps etc. I would be happy to post what I did as I made a backup of the original java folder first so I can see whats been removed. PM me if you want before and after copies.

When you run the desktop manager - click on application loader - thats how you uncheck or check whatever apps you want loaded.

I am also wondering about the help application. Don't need it, don't use it but what happens if I delete it?

I am also wondering about the help application. Don't need it, don't use it but what happens if I delete it?

Maybe I'm missing something.... How do you delete the preinstalled media files? I can't seem to locate them. I did it before with the video and can't remember.

Along those lines, the file name still shows up in the Media app, but with zero bytes. Any way to remove that?

Also, with the language files, when I use DM, I don't see them. Only way I see to delete is to use the Pearl to delete them.

2. Download, and install to your PC, the OS for your BB from the link below. Then delete the vendor.xml file located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader. Then open desktop manager and run Application Loader again. It should recognize your software and you should be able to check and uncheck what you want and don't want.
