Just purchased the new Cingular Pearl. Love everything about the phone except the SureType system. Would rather double tap a key when typing.

Is there a way to turn SureType off?

Yes you can. You can change it to Multitap (the double tap) mode. I think you go in options and keyboard and change it. Dont have the Pearl in front of me so not 100% sure if the location I told you is correct. If I am wrong, somebody please correct it.

Also, when you are in memo or task or programs that allow editing of text content, when you click on the menu, it will show "enable multitap" if you are in suretype mode.

Go into Options>Language>input language click on it and change to Multitap mode.

However, as a new user of Suretype, give it a bit and chances are you'll change your mind. The more you use it, the more it personalizes itself to you.

I second the suggestion to give suretype a chance.. I find myself typing 70% as fast as I did on my 8700 and I think it will creep up to 80% as soo.. the last 20% I'll chalk up to the smaller keyboard and accept the trade off.

To juggle between Multitap and SureType you can also press and hold the '*' key. When you get to multitap mode you'll see an ABC icon in the upper right corner.

GMK...you are absolutely right. All day, I have been texting, emailing and chatting with friends on Instant Messenger and SureType actually turns out to be fantastic!

Only on a few occasions has it screwed up. I havent been looking at the screen when typing, which after just reading a few other threads, is what most people are suggesting. That is the best advice!

The next thing to do is to develop your own word associations/shortcuts via Autotext in options and to keep an eye on the custom wordlist in options. The custom wordlist can work against you as it will pick up bad spellings and other words you don't need or want. I edit it about once a week and it really helps Suretype perform. Glad its working out for you.
