I always find that editing .alx files is a pain. You have to create a clean copy in case anything goes wrong and then modify a whole bunch of lines, know vendor codes, etc. Deleting preloaded themes is a pain because you have to find them and then add a different vendor code. People claim that preloaded media can't be deleted.

There's a much easier way: Maybe a lot of you know this, but I just discovered it, so I'm passing it on.

Javaloader can be used to add vendor themes and to delete preloaded themes (or to add or delete any .cod file - INCLUDING Preloaded Media).

This requires javaloader.exe (search to download).

To delete a preloaded them, simply open a command prompt (start menu>run>cmd), and then type the following: "javaloader -usb erase -f XXXXXXXXX.cod" where "XXXXXXXXX.cod" is the name of the theme file you want want to delete. For example, I deleted the crappy Cingular theme on my Pearl by typing:

"javaloader -usb erase -f net_rim_theme_102_icon_240x260_b.cod"

If you have to add back a theme or other .cod file (for example the Cingular theme), copy the .cod file to the folder where javaloader.exe is, and then open a command prompt and type:

"javaloader -usb load net_rim_theme_102_icon_240x260_b.cod."

It's easy. But beware that you could seriously f%$# up your device. Deleting the Zen theme caused no problems on my 7130, but deleting the zen theme on my Pearl basically bricked the device. But, I simply added it back and everything is fine. I use the Today Theme, so I deleted the Dimension Icon Theme as well.

I also deleted the preloaded mp3 file, avi file, and all of the preloaded pictures by typing:

"javaloader -usb erase -f net_rim_bb_media_240x260_b.cod"

To delete the preloaded ringtones type:

"javaloader -usb erase -f net_rim_bb_profiles_tunes_tunebundles_tunes8700g.c od"

The preloaded media still shows in the media player files, but the files don't exist. If I click on a picture it says, for example: "Unable to display file /Device Memory/samples/pictures/accelerate.png"

In total, I freed up more than 6 MB of device memory.

Thanks for sharing that info. I'd love to free up more device memory and there are themes I don't use such as dimension icon. I'm gonna attempt this later on today.

the preloaded .avi is still there for some reason. Anyone have success deleted the filename from the 8100?

You can delete the preloaded .avi from Desktop Managar if the OS package is also installed on your PC.

I got 44 megs free.... lean and mean!!!! and i have like 8 games... yak... and like 10 other apps....

i got rid of

-the media pictures like described above.
-all themes except the two tmobile zen themes and the orginal zen theme
-removed myfave5

i think i gained about 6-10 megs

Another method (which I think is easier and more visual for the command-line-inept), assuming you have Desktop Manager and the handheld OS installed on your PC (which most/some should, as you would have installed/upgraded the device OS), you could simply delete/move the desired file(s) from the installation's Java directory and open Application Loader.

I downloaded the JL_Cmder which I hear comes with javaloader.exe

I've successfully used JL_Cmder to wipe the handheld device in the past but I can't seem to get the javaloader.exe to work. I've located it in my C:/program files and when I double click it I see a quick flash of a black screen and that it.

Someone told me go to start/run then type in CMD and I should be able to use the commands to clear out the mp3 track and pictures that came preloaded with the Pearl but when I type in CMD then the command I get an error message all the time.

Can anyone provide me with instructions on how to do this so I can go ahead and delete more pre loaded media.

copy javaloader.exe to c: drive
open command prompt.

1. cd\
should make it on c:\
do a "dir"

make sure you see javaloader.exe

then copy and paste the commands above to the dos prompt and thats it... it is a dos app no windows gui

I have been trying to download some new themes for my 8800, so many threads suggested to go to the "mobile.blackberry.com" page on my device, or to go to Options/Themes/Download Themes. However on the browser, I CANNOT for the life of me find a section about downloading themes (ringtones and everything else shows up in the menus though), and then I tried the Options way, and I got this message: "Sorry, themes are currently not available for your Blackberry device. Theme downloads require colour Blackberry devices running software version 4.1 or higher".
Which is strange because--- this is a brand new 8800, definitely colour, definitely v. 4.2.

Anybody have any idea why I can't get in there? Are they not available for 8800? Are they not available for Hong Kong (Smartone-Vodafone)?

followed the instructions here and it worked great in removing the themes from the TIM version.

the only problem i ran into was that the preloaded pics and mp3 file were not deleted when putting in:

"javaloader -usb erase -f net_rim_bb_media_100_240x260_b.cod"

i DO see "...net_rim_media_five_icon_library"... is this part of the preloaded pics/mp3? is this safe to delete?

i also saw "net_rim_tmo_five"... what's this?

net_rim_tmo_five are for the MyFaves application on T-Mobile BlackBerrys.

i went ahead and deleted the five_icon_library as well as the tmo_five. i seemed to gain about 2mb.

i'm still kinda irked that i can't delete the preloaded mp3/pics despite following the instructions above. anyone do this on the Italy version? i see another media file called "net_rim_media"... would this be related to the preloaded files?
