Very Bad Car Stereo Interference

Cingular 8100 - Is there anything that I can do to make it go away or minimise it? It is really loud and jaring.

That's GSM for ya. It has to do with the frequency it operates at and interference with electronics. It does that with landline phones too.

I've never had an issue with GSM phones. I always had problems with Nextel though.

jsimon77 12-07-2006 06:02 PM

So what can I do to make it less loud. It is really bad and happens every couple of minutes.

mckinneycm 12-07-2006 06:05 PM

What are you hearing? Is it through the phone or the radio?

jsimon77 12-07-2006 07:10 PM

It is very loud through the speakers. If I move it away from the stereo it is not as loud. But my car is small and not too much room to move it away.

mckinneycm 12-07-2006 07:14 PM

What does it sound like?

admartinezjr 12-07-2006 07:16 PM

Yes, GSM phones are notorious for this but mine is not that bad unless it is in close proximity to the radio. It also happens on my computer speakers if the phone is sitting close on the desk.

infernox 12-07-2006 07:21 PM

Some GSM phones do cause that interference. Mine does that but I have a SIM card instead of no SIM card on CMDA. ;)

richard371 12-07-2006 08:16 PM

Cingular has this problem. Have not noticed with tmobile.

bflint 12-07-2006 08:54 PM

mine does it with tmo but only on gprs not edge where i live there is only grps

Berry O Black 12-07-2006 08:59 PM

Okay. You ahbould know its more than Gsm its Cingular its happened with a bunch of phones I had with them. I have T-Mobile now no problems. Plus I pay a lot less.

RoadRider 12-07-2006 09:26 PM

Happens with TMO also, but seems to be less intense than Cingular

Cingular uses 850 MHz, TMo uses 1900MHz. You get more GSM buzz on 850 because it typically uses more power to TX. what you're hearing is actually the TDMA channel transaction setting up an oscillation in your speaker wires (the period of the TDMA transaction makes this an audible noise).

You could always move closer to a base station :)

jsimon77 12-08-2006 12:21 AM

Wow what a pain. Is this going to be a deal breaker for my new pearl that I love?

dwc 12-08-2006 12:43 AM

Are you asking us if it is a deal breaker?

jsimon77 12-08-2006 01:06 AM

I'm not asking but I'm wondering? I have 3 more weeks before my return period is over for the phone. I drive a boxster so there is not a lot of room to move the phone away from the stereo. Just not sure if I can take that noise every other minute...

Szadzik 12-08-2006 05:10 AM

Guys, it has nothing to do with Cingular or Tmo. It only depends on the quality of cables used in the car stereo. If they are of good quality, there will be no interference, but when the cables are crap there will be a lot of interference.
That's the problem.

Bu11d0z3r 12-08-2006 08:28 AM

I must disagree

I had the 7100g with Cingular and it would make that horrible noise next to ANY speaker! I couldn't place the phone in a cradle in the car unless I completely turned off the radio and I couldn't bring the phone anywhere near my bedroom because the noise would come through the speaker in the alarm clock, baby monitor, you name it!

I now have the Pearl from the T-Mob. I never hear that noise any more. I can leave it right on the night stand next to my alarm clock and nothing.

Sounds like a Cingular issue to me.
