Unhappy Hello! And a huge problem!

Please Login to Remove!

I am so frustrated with my Pearl that I had to post this before I even edit my profile, but I'll get to that as soon as I finish typing! I also look forward to contributing to the community and sharing my BlackBerry experiences!

Hi to my fellow BBerry addicts, I am new to the club, but already heavily addicted, to the point that I do not know how I survived without my Pearl!

Here is (are) my problem(s):

Just a bit of background before I get to the problem: Five days ago, my Pearl had about 20 pictures, 200 contacts, an active calendar/tasks/memo, as well as about 5MB of ringtones, all this on top of what comes with the device. I've had it about 3 weeks before that, during which time it performed to perfection!

At this point, it read about 10MB free (+/- a MB). This already baffled me as I have no idea where the other 54MB went, but it didn't bother me, I am about to buy the SD card anyway. I figured internal software takes most of the flash onboard mem. Out of the box it only had about 15MB free anyway, so I put about 6MB on it in 3 weeks.

However, four days ago, everything started going funny:

1. I wake up, and find my Pearl is extremely slow, every action takes seconds or longer, with the hourglass appearing every few seconds, even if just touching the "pearl" and no other action. Calls take forever to make, txt messages take forever to type (hourglass appearing while typing, stalling the Pearl)

2. This worried me already, then it got worse. When I went into my call log, it was completely empty. Then I went into my Message center, and it was empty (previously it held about 300 text messages). I have it set to keep "forever".

If I call out, receive a call, txt message, whatever, it does not keep it at all, the msg and call log is always empty, and if I happen to miss a call or txt message, its gone, its only there to see if I catch it immediatly.

Just to point out, my calendar and address book are unnaffected! THANKFULLY, otherwise a lawsuit would be in order, lol.

3. After freaking out for a bit, I went to "status", and found out that I have 0 bytes free!!! Overnight!! With NO ACTIVITY!! From 9MB to 0! Baffling!

4. Decided to delete the 5MB of ringtones that I installed a few days prior (mind you, there was no problem for days with them on!). All of a sudden, it was back to fast usage, no hourglass, but guess what, the status said that I now had 433KB free! Even tho I deleted 5MB!!

5. It gets worse. After about three or so hours, the hourglass appears again! I check status, and its 0 bytes free! AGAIN! But I did not do anything, except maybe a few calls!

6. This is the kicker. I have since deleted EVERYTHING, except calendar/task/memo entries and address book. All ringtones, pics etc I added I deleted, but still it says 0 bytes free, and is slow as heck!

Sorry for the long message, but this really has me worried!

What should I do?

Will a MicroSD card fix all this right away? That would be an easy way out, but I really want to know wth is up, if I have a defective product or what (it worked flawlessly for about 3 weeks).

Thank you, and wish me luck!

Try deleting your event log

From the home screen - hold alt (bottom left key) and type lglg

See if that frees anything up.

You need a memory card. Sounds like it is dumping files because you overloaded it.

Have you tried the battery reset? Sounds like you have not.

Remove the battery, wait 10 seconds, then reinstall it. See how things look from there.

A battery reset! You gotta be kidding! How in the world didn't I think of that, since its the thing I do as an IT guy for most electronic devices as a first option, lol.

Indeed, after seeing the hourglass for a minute, when it turned back on, it now says 15MB free again, unbeliavable!

You ever see a BBerry user jumping for joy? Yeah, thats me right now.

But now its starting to sink in! What if it happens again! I like to have my BBerry to keep all my history, forever (txt messages especially, and max for call log).

Any idea why this happened and how it can be prevented? Will a SD card fix this, at least to the point that it will save my data even if I do have to do a battery reset due to some memory loss? Does the Pearl use the SD card first or all the onboard mem first before the SD?

And finally, what is a good forum to learn about updating firmware or software/OS, so that I can use a 2GB card (I am assuming I can only use a 1GB card right now?), etc?

Thanx in advance.

ps. jp03, how do I look at my event log, to see how much mem its taking, and whats in it? By deleting it, will I lose any important data?

Thankfully I backup often, so I think even my txt and call log I can get back (if they are backed up).

Last question for this post (yes, I know I am overwhelming you, sorry, but I'm very thankful, to both of you): If I restore a backup, does it override any new entries (say, in the calendar and address book, etc), or does it just add whatever is missing, but keeps the new data intact? I don't want to use the backup file if it will get rid of the new calendar and address data I have addedd since the problem 3 days ago!

Some suspect a memory leak in the Pearl depending which O/S version you are running. (Since I installed .67 my leak seeems to have stopped.) In the meantime you will probably need to pull the battery once a week or so if you see memory getting low. You can also:

1. Delete unused languages under 'Language and Input Support' and 'Input Support' (Options/Advanced Options/Applications) to free up ~5MB.
2. 'Close' programs rather than just pressing the Escape key to exit (leaves them running in the background).
3. Delete the demo video that comes pre-installed. Frees up ~2MB.
4. Get a microSD card and store your photos, tunes and ringtones on the card.

Search the forums. You'll find many threads covering this problem. Here's a good one: Free up 5-10 MEGS of space!!!!!!! Really! - RIM Blackberry Forums - Pinstack.com

Also, search the forum about disabling the event log. That has seemed to help me. Additionally, keep the OS up to date.

Current downloadable Applications version is 4.2.0.67 from Telefonica SP. Cingular has a newer version, but it is not downloadable at this time.

So does deleting the event log pose any potential problems or does it just possible free up space?

Like the other guys said.....pull the battery and erase your logs. Also, move your imported ringtones to the memory card when you get it. Remove any 3rd party apps you may not use and try using the default zen theme.

At the risk of sounding stupid, what's the event log? I mean what "events' are on it and why? I regularly delete various messages. Also, Stinsonddog's shortcuts from Pinstack say that holding the Escape key closes the Browser. Does it also close the webpage that's running?

I will indeed go deeper into the history of these forums and find the info, as time permits. But in the meantime, is it even possible to remove the default stuff on the Pearl? I mean the demo video for example, or the preloaded ringtones/wallpaper etc? I don't need any of that stuff, so I wouldn't mind getting rid of it.

As far as the event log, I would far rather keep it on, even if I have no clue what its for or how to even access it, lol. I'll wait until I learn more about it before I empty it and/or disable it.

I am going to buy a SD card tomorrow, but I need to know whether I can buy the 2GB one with my OS, I don't want any problems (but don't really want to buy a 1GB if 2GB works, there is just no sense in that).

My OS is 4.2.0.51 (Platform 2.2.0.32)
Cryptographic Kernel 3.8.4.28

Thanx.

EDIT (5 mins since post, lol): Ok, found out under advanced how to delete most stuff. Thanx! Now I just need to know if my BBerry supports 2GB microSD card.

Also, is it important to buy a specific brand of microSD? A store in the are has Kingston, SanDisk, and OCZ, all for the same price (around $100CAD for 2GB), but also carries some other names that I don't recognize for about 30% (or more) less! What you think?

Do I have to d/l the OS from my provider (Rogers in my case, Southern Ontario, in case you're wondering), or is it all the same? I know the OS is the same, but I wonder if there would be a problem since I am sure that companies add/remove stuff and flavour the OS to their particular liking.

I've searched the Rogers site and can't find any Blackberry stuff at all, the only info is general to all handhelds, and focuses on data plans etc., not on actual devices and functionality.

I don't have them handy, but there are several links in this forum for OS downloads from a couple places. It doesn't matter which provider you get them from as they all come from RIM. But, after installing the new OS on your dekstop, locate and delete the vender.xml file. .69 from Cingular is the latest and can be downloaded from their web site.
