I called t-mobile and got sent to RIM. Turns out I needed to remove the battery, wait for a couple of minutes, put the battery back in, turn on phone, reconnect wireless, now the sound works fine! Not to chime in on every thread, but....
Generally whenever you have problems with the Pearl, meaning it is acting up in some way, always go through the battery reset procedure, sometimes as many as three times if the problem is not fixed on the first reset try.
Many problems occur simply because that little Pearl OS is doing lots of things nowadays, besides phone and e-mail functions. Eventually the Pearl goes bonkers and needs to reboot, just like people need to do by the time each weekend arrives.
