Thumbs up Laser etched Pearl - 12-12-2006, 12:49 PM

Recently we were made aware of a London based company called Razorlab. These guys have made a name for themselves by laser cutting and engraving peoples electronic equipment - most notably until now in the iPod and MacBook arena, but they're now working on mobile phones too (surface area dependant no doubt)!! I wanted to know what the vibe was and marched down there armed with my BlackBerry Pearl to meet Razorlab's Creative Director.

As you can see the results are great (despite the fact the photos don't do the work justice) - it took them just a few minutes to measure everything up in to a template and show me what the finished article would look like. Next I watched as my precious Pearl was placed in to what looked like a huge scanner and was repeatedly battered with a red laser for about 30 seconds, at which point the work was done. I am chuffed to bits with the result and I'm the envy of colleagues (and geek friends). This is my one off Pearl...awww yeahhh!!!

Here's a link to their site if you want to check them out!!!

I like it.

I wonder if I sent them a backing and a picture would I ever see them merged, along with the cost associated with it getting there worked on and back again.

Very cool. Now just get them to turn up the intensity of the laser, so you can do the speakerphone case mod with a custom bb logo cutaway, a la:

WOW!!! That looks fantastic!!!
Did you take the cover off and then etched or was the whole BB put in and etched??

If it's only the back cover then I would send mine to get it etched.

Thanks for the info!! Great Photo!!!

That's absolutely sick! You should see if they'd like to get involved in the Forums...I have to think this would be something people could get into...

At the very least, are they capable of working with us overseas folks?

Wirelessly posted (Cingular 8100 Pearl: BlackBerry8100/4.2.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102)

Should check to see if they are willing to source the covers themselves, then have a faster turnaround for their customers

Anyone wondering how this would look on a Seidio or other case?

He had to put the whole BlackBerry in to the machine

I doubt it. To them BlackBerry is just one piece of kit they can engrave on, so I can't see them keeping stock of stuff.

Robb Dunewood has kindly done a little review for me as well:

That's actually a really good idea. I think that's the only thing I would want in way of modifying the back panel, though... I like that whole minimalist look

After reading this I thought I'd take a look. Had a nice chat with Soner who was sorting out the designs and getting them etched on his huge machine.

I brought along logos from my website to etch, so I've attached some images.

It costs £25 for an etching but if you're an O2 customer you get it for free until the end of this promotion at the Bond Street store (24 December).
