Lost Call Log & Messages -
12-21-2006, 11:42 PM
For apparently no reason whatsoever, it seems as though my call log and all my text messages have dissappeared. Everything else seems in order, all calendar, tasks, memos, etc., are still there. Any idea what could have caused this or has anyone had this happen before?

No, I didn't change themes. I have changed themes since owning the 8100, but that did not effect my call log or messages, at that time. Honestly, I did nothing that would have prompted this deletion. Keypad's been locked and the phone was in my pocket. I just went to call a number and noticed all previous calls weren't there, then I checked around and saw all the messages I received after 12/12 weren't there either. odd.

I had exactly the same thing happen to me. I thought it was related to me changing to a new theme. My call long was completely blank and my Messages between 10:31 and 3:47 (about 60 or so) are all missing.
I have been searching the forums to see if anyone else had the problem, but it seems that an upgrade to .69 for Cingular users helped, but I am already on .69
Anyone else with ideas why it might be happening?

This happened to me today as well. Here's what I did to bring the call log back:
- From Applications or the Home screen, select Call Log > Options > General Options
- Change Phone List View to Most Recent
- Select Save and exit.
At this point, your call log should be restored, but without the icons that indicate whether the call was incoming or outgoing and without the date of the call. The Help points out "Your BlackBerry device stores call logs for 30 days".

I'm not so concerned with my call log. I'm a bit upset that all my messages to a certain point were deleted. I've pretty much figured it to be a low memory issue.

Cingular with .69 still shows the issue... -
01-14-2007, 01:18 AM
I've read in other forums that .69 seems to have solved this issue. I just got my phone yesterday, and by tonight, boom, the issue appeared. Checked the version and its running .69. Does anyone from BB read these forums and if so, can some level of help be provided. Disappearing call logs is a real pain, loss of sms context is just as bad. Nice phone, terrible issue.

I had the same problem about a week ago. I called t mobile they were no help at all. I was searching through the phone and found the i had no memory. I messed around with all the options nothing worked. You have to delete all your and your browser history. You have to go to this
1. go into your browser
2. press the menu key which brings up 3 options 1)browser 2) general and 3) cache.
3. open the cache operations
4. clear history, content cache, and the cookie cache.
After i did this i got memory back and my call log and messages were not deleted anymore. I found that you have to do this atleast once every two weeks or depending on how much ou use your browser.
Please let me know if this workes for you?

I've emptied memory and the logs have hung around but here's a thought on this. My logs and things were there for the past 5 or six days with no problem. Yesterday from the message screen I did a "delete prior" and wham all of my call logs were gone from the phone screen AND the message list screen (as was expected). Deleting from the phone screen didn't happen on my 8700 or my 7100. Although it makes sense since my phone logs are also reporting in the message screen, as such when one does a "delete prior" everything prior will get bounced.
Am I missing the boat with this theory or imagining things due to allergy medicine?

This just happened to me today and it also happened to me about a month ago. I lost all of E-Mail messages prior to 11:00 am this morning and my call history/logs are gone. I am on a BES with Groupwise and thankfully it didn't delete all of my messages in my GroupWise inbox.

I am also having this problem! Very frustrating. I'm using the latest Cingular software. I have not checked into the memory issue as mentioned above. I'm losing my call log as soon as the call ends leaving it completely empty. I'll check into my memory and follow up with any changes.

is there any way to work out what is using up my blackberry's memory?
what are other common things that could be taking up memory?
cheers

Well this just happened to me today also. I've got a white pearl from T-Mobile. I noticed that my call log was gone and since reading this thread I checked my messages and they are gone too. I never had these problems with my 8700 and I am not very happy about it. Hopefully someone can figure it out soon.

Here is some information from **(wireless provider name removed)** that might be of use to some of us experiencing memory leak problems:
RIM has identified a design problem with the way that controls within the media application have been implemented. In the media options ("Media Application" > Pick an application such as Pictures > [BlackBerry Menu Key] > "Options") there are two settings:
“Reserved Pictures Memory” – Default Value = 10 MB – This setting reserves memory for Pictures that the customer may take. It blocks off the memory, reducing the “File Free” amount that displays in “Options” > “Status”. This guarantees that the customer will have memory available and will not overwrite email messages within the memory setting set.
“Device Memory Limit” – Default Value = 20 MB – This setting is a safety water mark. It prevents the customer from placing more than the specified amount of memory in their content store (pictures, ringtones, music, etc.. in device memory)
The implementation problem with these settings is that the “Reserved Pictures Memory” setting does not prevent the customer from going beyond the specified amount of memory. That is to say, if the customer has it set to the default value of 10MB, they are not prevented from taking 15MB of pictures for example. The only setting that will limit them is the “Device Memory Limit” setting.
The 20MB default value for this setting is a bit high as typically after loading the handheld software, the memory available is about 20MB. If the customer has a number of contacts, calendar entries, tasks, memopad items, emails, etc… they could have less than 20MB available. This means, with the default settings, the customer could fill their content store to the point that Low Memory Manager activates in an attempt to free up new space by deleting emails and call logs. If approached by a customer in this situation, please recommend that they reduce the “Device Memory Limit” setting to it’s lowest value of 12MB. It is recognized that even this value is high, and the values (including the defaults) are being adjusted in future releases of handheld software.
================================================== ========
Having a large amount of images, ringtones and or games stored in the device may reduce available free memory. If the BlackBerry Pearl's memory is at or near capacity the handheld will begin to delete the oldest Call Log and Text Message (SMS) entries in an effort to free up memory space. In order to prevent this, free memory must be increased.
NOTE: Saved messages will not be deleted.
Determine the Amount of Free Memory on the BlackBerry
- If the amount of free memory available on the handheld is 0, the amount of free memory must be increased to prevent the handheld from auto deleting call log entries and messages.
Suggested Ways to Increase Free Memory
Reduce Allocated Media Memory
- Scroll to and select the Media icon.
- Select the Pictures icon.
- Select the Device Memory icon.
- Press the Menu key, select Options.
- Change the Device Memory Limit to 12MB.
- Press the Menu key, select Save.
- Hard Reset the BlackBerry.
Reduce Calendar Keep Appointments to 60 days or less
- Scroll to and select the Calendar icon.
- Press the Menu key, select Options.
- Scroll to and select Keep Appointments.
- Select the desired amount of time to keep appointments.
- Press the Menu key, select Save.
- Hard Reset the BlackBerry.
Reduce the amount of time Messages are kept on the handheld.
- Scroll to and select the Calendar icon.
- Press the Menu key, select Options.
- Select General Options.
- Scroll to and select Keep Messages.
- Select the desired amount of time to keep appointments.
- Press the Menu key, select Save.
- Hard Reset the BlackBerry.
Clear Cache and Cookies
- Scroll to and select the Browser or Media Net icon.
- Press the Menu key.
- Select Options.
- Select Cache Operations.
- Select Clear History.
- Note: Clear History will no longer appear once it has been selected.
- Hard Reset the BlackBerry.
Delete Unused Languages
Note: If deleting both the unused languages and the sample video wait to restart the device until both processes have been completed
- Scroll to and select the Settings icon.
- Select the Options icon.
- Select Advanced Options.
- Select Applications.
- Scroll to and highlight each of the unused languages under the Input Support and Language and Input Support subheadings.
- Press the Menu key.
- Select Delete.
- Select Delete.
- When prompted to Restart select No until all unused languages are deleted.
- NOTE:Repeat steps 4-8 until all unused languages are deleted then select Yes when prompted to restart.
- Hard Reset the BlackBerry.
Delete Sample Video
Note: If deleting both the unused languages and the sample video wait to restart the device until both processes have been completed. The sample video is the pre-installed video for the blackberry and is ~2.2MB in size.
- Scroll to and select the Settings icon.
- Select the Options icon.
- Select Advanced Options.
- Select Applications.
- Scroll to and highlight "Blackberry Sample Video".
- Press the Menu key.
- Select Delete.
- Select Delete.
- When prompted to Restart select Yes.
- Hard Reset the BlackBerry.
Change Call Log Options
- Scroll to and select the Phone icon.
- Press the Menu key.
- Select Options.
- Select Call Logging.
- Select either Missed Calls or None.
- Hard Reset the BlackBerry.
Hope this stuff helps some folks... additionally you could also delete the even log... I just saw something about this in another thread here and after posting I'll go check out the instructions.
Bob
P.S. Props to the folks at BlackBerryForums for having such an easy to use interface.. This stuff lost all formatting when I did a copy/paste and took only 2 or 3 minutes to just highlight and format.

Back up your BB using desktop manager and then do a full wipe. That should do it, keep in mind it does take a while.

Try this Alucard...
Go to Call Log
Press Menu key
Select Options
Select Call Logging
If Missed Calls is selected change it to None.
If the problem you are having is that missed calls are showing up in the messages box then this should solve your problem. Let us know if it works.

That will surely get it working right!
Allucard, your call log won't come back, its gone. If you keep your device with clear memory you will retain it from now on... as stated in the above posts.

If I limit the amount of time messages are stored, does that also apply to SMSs or just email?

Well, whenever my phone would do this--I also noticed EVERYTIME I would send a text after all the text were gone, but email were there that the text actually wern't sending, and if they were sending, as soon as sombody would respond, it would delete it's self.
All i would do though is turn off the phone for like a min, and turn it back on. That usually made it work ok. If that didn't work, i pulled the battery.

This is a pathetic joke. Perhaps sufficient memory should have been put into this business device. To have data loss like I'm experiencing without notice is something even my old Treo wouldn't do to. This is a serious problem.
