When you're at a text input screen, hold down * key until you see ABC in the upper right corner.

but honestly you should give SureType a try.....unless you prefer pushing a key multiple times to get the letter you want....cause that is what MultiType would be the mode you would enable by turning off SureType to my knowledge anyway

You can set multi-tap to default by Options - Language - Input Language, then selecting a language of your choice with multi-tap.

But, I recommend that you hang with suretype for a while - it just keeps getting better over time as it learns the words you use and are exposed to.

the hardest part is making yourself not want to fix the word after every character....it took me about a week or two to get over that hurdle....now i just check at the end of each word

I just stare at the keys as I'm typing, and then when I'm completely done, I'll go back and prove read it.

One general suggestion (to save everyone a lot of time!): Read the brochure (*gasp!*) and/or poster that came with your Pearl, and run the Setup Wizard App. These will tell you many useful things, some of which you may not even know to ask about.
