On occassion in the NYC area, I lose EDGE and go to "GSM". At this point I can't send nor receive emails, or even browse the net. I thought that if it displayed "GSM" in caps I wouldn't lose email conectivity. Phone and SMS works fine. Once "EDGE" comes back all is fine. This is with Cingular BTW. Any ideas?

If your phone says just GSM, your phone cannot connect to any data network, so it can't receive email, surf the web, etc. You need at least GPRS or preferrably EDGE.

Most, if not all, of Cingular's native network has at least GPRS. You are probably roaming onto a network that doesn't support data.

As long as this problem only occurs when you are in certain areas, there's nothing wrong with your phone and I doubt there's anything you can do about it.

You might try turning Wireless off and on again to make your phone try again to connect to a data network.

Ahhh! What was I thinking. I confused GSM with GPRS. Funny thing is this happened in midtown Manhattan a couple of times. Hard to believe there are GPRS deadspots there. Thanks!

intersting sometimes I get GRPS when I am in Chelsea don't know why no edge but I really don't pay mind to it.
