Default Weird Message List Shortcut Key Problem

Please Login to Remove!

I have been experiencing a weird problem with the message list shortcut keys, in particular the Alt-I (or 3) shortcut to only display incoming messages. I am on my 2nd Cingular Pearl and previously had a TMobile Pearl - all eventually suffer from this problem. In addition a friend of mine has gone through 5 TM Pearls and they all eventually have this problem. The weirdest part is that everything starts out working fine (see excerpt from manual below) but eventually (anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks) it stops working.

Below I am pasting text from the BB manual which shows how these shortcuts are supposed to work:

View one type of message in a message list:
  • To view received messages, press the Alt key and 3.
  • To view call logs, press the Alt key and the period (.) key.
  • To view voice mail messages, press the Alt key and 7.
  • To view SMS text messages, press the Alt key and the question mark (?) key.
  • To view all your messages again, press the Escape key
Here's the problem:

In the message list I have the options set to show all Sent and Filed messages. I like to sometimes just see my incoming messages. For the first week or two with a new Pearl, the Alt-I (or 3) shortcut works fine. But after a week or two, this shortcut no longer works - it doesn't do anything. In addition, the Alt-P (or .) shortcut to show phone calls stops working and instead it shows Outgoing messages (Alt-O). Have also had issues where the Alt-S (or ?) to show SMS messages stops working.

So right now, I've had my current phone for two weeks and just started experiencing the problem:
  • Alt-I (3) does nothing
  • Alt-O/P (.) shows Outgoing (not Phone Calls)
  • Alt-V (7) does nothing
  • Alt-S (?) does nothing
  • Alt-M (9) shows MMS messages (this is a new one)

Any thoughts on what is going on here. Anyone else have this problem.

Sorry for the lengthy post.

I can see all of the various messages (out, in, sms) doing what you posted as long as I have not deleted them first. If I delete them (say as they come in, which I tend to do), they won't show up in the folders/shortcuts.

All my shortcuts work fine and I've had my Pearl for 3 months now.

When you say "doing what I posted" do you mean towards the top of the post - in other words what the manual says?

Yes - when you delete messages they no longer sort using the shortcuts - that makes sense obviously.

The weird part is that like I said in my original post, between me and my friend (we both work at the same company), we have gone through 7 different pearls with two different carriers and they have all exhibited identical problems (eventually - all within two weeks).

Default same problem

i have the exact same problem but have no idea why.

My only guess so far is that it has something to do with my BES server or IT policies at my company. Others I know not on a BES don't have the same issue.

All my shortcuts work fine. I am on a BES but very liberal as far as IT Policy goes....I don't even think they have any IT Policy restrictions on us.

Same. I am on BES with what I believe is a liberal IT policy (I work in a company w/ less than 20 people). On our old 7230's (most of the people at my company still have these) the shortcuts worked - or at least the incoming and outgoing messages shortcuts did. Very weird.

Quick update to this problem. My firm decided to splurge and get everyone either Pearl's or 8700's. We now have about 5 Cingular Pearls and 8 TMO Pearls and all suffer from the problem described above. Very weird that others (outside of my company) don't seem to be experiencing this problem. Any thoughts?
