Default Pearl firmware issue, please help, please...

Please Login to Remove!

.....purchased a Pearl from Telstra here in Australia (Mexican if that matters). I am using the Optus Service Provider and not Telstra and was assured all would work. Some things have not, such as using the WAP browser and downloading themes. Well I noticed that the firmware provided by Optus was newer, so I decided to download and install that.

Everything appeared to work well with the install and it was completed, but the phone did not restart, it did nothing, the firmware was still the same. Any ideas on why this is so? Does this mean, I need to return it and buy one sold by my own service provider? I would prefer not to as it is $130 cheaper through the supplier I purchased from......please advise.......

Thanks in advance, Kris

guys, I know I'm not American talking about Cingular and T-Mobile, but if you have any idea about what I am talking about, please let me know as it will be far more convenient getting an answer here than the alternative....also tried tech support in Oz, and they are useless....and can't find an email for support on Blackberry's website......please help.....

Did you try to reload the firmware? Make sure to search for and delete the vendor.xml file.

FYI, during the install it asks me whether i want to 'repair' or 'remove' the software which sounds a bit odd. This is definately the device software and not the dekstop software.....

Try uninstalling the device software from your PC, then re-install it, delete the vendor.xml, and see if Desktop manager then sees it as a new OS and allows you to install it. Also, if it does install, DO NOT touch the BB until it completely restarts. There have been reports of this taking as long as 30-40 minutes.

coreymckinney has the javaloader you need to wipe the device. (at least he did last time I looked) Click Here
try wiping the handheld and following roadrider's directions. good luck. let us know how it works out.

hi mate.
i did exactly what u did, i bought my 8100 from telstra and using the optus network.
my phone came with .64 loaded, everything worked out of the box.
the optus zoo icon is a telstra one however.

i downloaded the optus .67 update. delete the vendor.xml from your computer HD.. and it will automagically ask u if u want to update your phone.. takes 10-15mins.... and everything works just as it should before...... telstra icon is still there however

edit - on the email topic... did optus give u the basic starter guide? its decent enough to get you going... www(dot)optus(dot)com(dot)au/blackberry ... set up and manage your account and off you go

I think sometimes it works best to wipe the handheld first (after a backup of course). then install the OS software you want. not always necessary but if you run into trouble it helps to start from scratch. just my .02

sounds like you've got it worked out tho, good show.

Yes Muck, mine worked out exactly as yours.....Optus tech support arranged an approval for a phone exchange, but i have to pay the courier fee to get it to them. I even told them I bought it from a Telstra Shop, and they said it is fine as I am an Optus Customer. They said I'd recieve a new Optus handset with the latest Optus icons etc....btw.....even after my software upgrade, I can't download new themes.....it just takes me to the Optus page....how about you mate?

my phone works perfectly.....
just that one telstra icon.. its not so much of a hassle has i can just hide the icon.. its only linked to zoo afterall.. and i can access it thru the bookmarks.......

it seems telstra terribly slow with their firmware releases.....
thankfully its only 1 icon and not a complete overhaul of themes etc etc...

i think grey imports might be teh way to go with future phones to avoid the horrible branding ... even with purchasing outright the phones are branded now..

only one i can think of is the 88xx nokias... that have escaped branding.... telstra and optus.. vodafone is a different story...

You have a good point there....how about themes? You have no issue downloading themes? Can you think of any reason why it opens up the wap portal when I select the 'download themes' option?

i was actually speaking to a tech guy tonite on an entirely different matter.. my sim card may be borked.. as its pretending to be a prepaid with no credits. haha thats another story.. i asked him if these telstra phones pose any problems on the optus network.. he said if the PIN and imei activates ok on their system.. u shouldnt have any problems.. except u might have to change some settings...... from what i gather.... all the optus settings seem to work out of the box....

strange the problems your encounting..

my starting homepage address is - www[dot]blackberry[dot]com/mobile/optus
and from there i navigate around.. and downloading the today plus theme isnt a problem.... im not redirected anywhere

Check your browser settings (open Browser app -> options -> Browser config) and see if your default browser is WAP or BB Browser. if the default is WAP, try changing it to the other and try DL'ing your themes.
