anyone had luck charging their 8100 just by leaving it connected via USB after syncing?

i can't seem to get mine to charge...i get this message saying USB charge not sufficient yada yada yada

I charge via the USB all the time.

Make sure you are using a powered USB port (and not through a hub).

It does work!

update the drivers, download the newest ones from rim and it will work

I have found that some USB 1.1 versions will not charge my BB. Weird oh well.. the 2.0's work.

i have no problem as well, charge it through USB hub at home and laptop dock in the office.

It's not luck that all our phones can be charged via USB, it's bad luck that you are having a problem.

Do as search under "USB charging" and threads will pop up on this subject. There's too many things to check to repeat them in here. [issues with drivers, 2.0 v 1.1, cables, ports, connections, etc.]

The reason why some USB ports can be used for charging Blackberries and some not is I think because some are designed to give out more power than others. The rating of some laptop USB ports very often for example is not enough and they don't give out as much (not sure if it is the Volt or the Ampere) as USB ports on some modern desktop systems.

If you google around under USB power output you will find more precise numbers, but the bottom line is that some USB ports will do it, some won't.

I have come across a USB cable that has two ends (to plug into two USB ports on the PC) and one mini plug on the other end (to go into the Blackberry). Using that cable it uses both USB ports as a power source and that works just nicely on every USB port pair I have come across. That cable was supplied with a small external USB HDD, I guess they have the same problem with insufficient power coming out of some ports. Those cables can also be bought separately.

Mine works via usb also, its usually charged by the time im transferring music and etc.

It doesn't work on a Mac on powered USB ports because some miscommunication between the BB and the Mac.

That might be the original posters problem.

Did I miss where he said he was using a Mac? Says he likes Macs in his profile, but not sure otherwise. But good call if you looked at the profile and thought about this.

Especially if he is on a Mac and did not mention such in his OP.

i havent even unpackaged the AC charger, USB all the way

I'm not to familiar with Mac's but I know they are coded much like linux is. You have to make sure that the USB port is pushing out 500ma in power and not in standby at 100ma. In linux we just have to change a setting but again I am not to familiar with Mac's. Good luck.
