I guess it is worth noting that the new Cingular version is a bit newer.

It is actually the .67 software. No one has the release notes. I KNEW I should I have put that in my note.

RIM gives the release notes to the carriers. They choose not to distribute them.

No it won't harm it at all. You'll be fine if you load the Cingular OS onto a Rogers Wireless branded Pearl.

Apparently the .51 OS has some sort of memory leak issue and the new Rogers Wireless OS update addresses that issue. I'm sure it will also address any other bugs that may have been in the previous OS version.

It's quite simple.

1) Start by downloading the software update then run and install the OS update.

2) Do not mark the option to open Desktop Manager when you see that option appear

3) If your Pearl isn't a Rogers branded one then go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader and delete Vendor.xml

4) Connect BlackBerry to computer via USB and open up the desktop manager

You should see then be prompted for the update to take place. Leave your BlackBerry connected until the OS upgrade has finished and do not disconnect it during the process.

Most go for the most recent 8100 OS update which happens to be released by Cingular. I have the Cingular OS on my TMo Pearl. Works great. Just follow the instructions above.

Open you desk top manager, and run the application loader now. If you did it right you will see the new update files there.

Shut down you desk top manager, reinstall the updated files, by running the file from the location you saved it in. Then and the end of the install, the install wizard should prompt you to start the desk top manager. Click that "box" Then you will see the updated files to be loaded on the phone.

Be very careful when putting Cingular branded firmware on your phone. I had a very bad experience.

Rogers user. Just updated my Pearl. Took like 45 minutes. I think this is normal, not sure though. Everything is working fine now. Not really sure what it fixed though.

Just thought I would let everyone know that all is ok with the update.

Will wait and see about moving to the cingular version. Hopefully someone will do a comparison if possible to explain the difference between the two.

Allan

You can download the Rogers OS if you want. You can even load the latest Cingular OS and you'll be fine. You will have to remove the vendor.xml file but other than that upgrading the OS is very simple to do.

I downloaded the new file for my rogers BB 8100, on my desktop. I ran the installation on the end of the installation it asked me to run the desktop manager and i checked the box, and press done, the desktop manger opened but nothing happened then i went to the common file folder and i saw that there a RIM files. Then i went back in the desktop manager and i ran the application loader but then the loader only reads what is in the phone, there is no update or anything, and it says that i should contact rogers for the update.....is it possible that i cant do that, i know that my phone is locked to rogers meaning that I cant use other service providers, other SIM cards. So any help would be appreciated! Thanx!

I was just wondering... I just use PocketMac to update my phone's calendar. I have no use for a destop OS. So will I need any of these updates for memory leaks???

I'm on the Rogers network ... and reading on here, it seems that upgrading using the Cingular software would not be an issue.

Are there ANY changes at all though? Will my pearl have the words cingular anywhere on the screen on in its "about" screen?

I'm just weary to upgrade the phone using another vendor's OS!

Also, does it matter which Desktop manager i initially installed? My phone is connected through BES for my work email, but i installed the "internet" version of the desktop manager.

Thanks everyone!
