Default Question about updating version of software

Please Login to Remove!

I have had my BB Pearl for a few weeks now and am starting to get the hang of it ie adding aftermarket applications, setting up email, etc. I have just checked O2 which is where my phone is from and see there is a new version of software.

here is the link:
BlackBerry from O2 - Help and support

if i download and install this am i going to lose all the stuff i have added and all the personalisation i have done to my phone. also is this even a newer system than the one i am currently running and is there any positives to upgrading this. my version is 4.2.0.51 (platform 2.2.0.32). as usual any advice is appreciated. cheers

This questions gets asked (and answered) a lot. A few times in the last week or so.

If you are NOT on a BES, then you will be fine. The first step of the process is to back up all data and over the air loaded programs. As long as the program backs up data properly, everything is fine. Some programs - like BBWeather - do not back up their data, so the program will be restored, but the data (locations) will not.

There are always bug fixes and the like in new versions. The newest version is 4.2.0.71 from Cingular (which runs fine on all other 8100s). There are no formal release notes since the carriers choose not to release them.

Thanks for the link to the O2 site as I have this version too ( 4.2.0.51 (platform 2.2.0.32). your question and the answer from NJBlackberry has helped.
Thanks to all.
