It's my theory that we are all trying to take picture too close. I think it focuses farther out (like your bed and feet look really clear in those pictures with the iPod, and your toothbrush in the one with the toothpaste) It must be meant for more landscape type pictures.

I dont think that the Pearl camera will ever replace a digital camera. The mega pixels just rnt high enough to do so. I think that it is only an item on there to increase their potential customer base, not one of its main features.

yea but i have compared this to my friends dash and blackjack and razr and the 1st two are 1.3 mp and the razr is vga for crying out loud and the pics still look better!!

and yea the nokia n90 something has a 6mp camera with dvd quality vid recording

It also depends on how steady your hand is, if you are trying to take an upclose shot of something steadiness is key. Otherwise the camera wont be able to focus on the image. Plus the zoom on it is digital, just makes the picture bigger instead of zooming in on it. And it is RIM's first camera, all the other companes you mentioned have had cameras on their phones for quite a few years.

well then they shouldnt say its 1.3mp par quality? cause it aint

in puerto rico last week. AMAZING. I LOVE THE CAMERA. GOT WAAAAAAAY BETTER ONES, the file size is too big tho for me to attach them.

The Pearl's camera needs lots of light, so indoor pictures are going to be fuzzy. And as others have said, a phone camera is never going to match the quality of a decent digital camera.

Also I've noticed the zoom isn't what I expeceted. It merely chops the picture at the center, it doesn't magnify or anything.

And the shutter speed in low light is really slow. Any movement of the hand or subject makes the picture suck basically. In decent light the pix are acceptable, otherwise they pretty much stink.

The shutter speed on the BB is just not enough sometimes to compensate for "camera shake."

If there is not enough light, the shutter may remain open so long that the image is blurred by the movement of the phone in your hand.

I noticed most of the examples were taken indorrs. Try taking a picture outside in full sun and see what type of quality you get.

There are two things here:

One is available light. The reasons many of your pictures look bad is because you're shooting indoors and there isn't much light. Go try a picture in bright mid day sun and you'll see how much better it looks....basically whenever you want a picture get as much light as possible.

Why? Because the camera is very small, if there isn't much light it has to greatly increase the sensitivity, which increases noise and reduces contrast and dynamic range.

ALSO- you said that the two pictures look the same to you...they are not even close.

The difference is in the amount of compression done with the jpeg compression. In normal there is quite a bit more artifacting....look at areas where there is a bunch of color that is very close (like the screen). See the patchy spots? That is compression artifacts.

People above have said it, you need to be SUPER SUPER steady inside and if your outside in low light. Even then 7 out of 10 pics will still be slightly fuzzy IMO.

Outside in bright light seems to be best as the Pearl is slow to take a picture.
