Anyway, as most of you know its got alot of options and features, and I guess learning any new phone os takes time, ive been using Nokia for YEARS now and im used to that.

I was going to start my own thread on this issue but this seemed like a better place to start.

I did most of my playing around with it last night, and I was ready to start installing apps and asking some usability/upgrade questions on here, since you all seem to really love your BB's and know alot about them! Anyway, I pull it out today after riding into San Fran to watch the QMII enter the SF-Bay (phenomenal ship! ), and I cant move UP on my home screen. I think, "Thats odd, ill reboot it". Still nothing!

The phone was purchased at 6pm yesterday and before even getting used to it, the most important button on it wont work right. I see the post before me said theirs stopped going Down but as you all can imaine, with no other way to navigate menus, its VERY FRUSTRATING .

Later tonight I found by rapidly scrolling up, and with almost enough pressure to click the ball in, i can get it to move up but it is in no way consitent and you fly past the icon youre trying to land on. Anyway It has improved since ive been doing the rapid scroll but I cant imagine its a buildup of dirt dust or anything else, Ive been babying the thing, and was about to get a case for it. Havent had it in my pocket much at all and when it has its been in a soft sunglasses case.

Obviously im going to exchange it tomorow but I wanted a good solid week to decide if it was for me, and now its got me wanting to just go with something else, that and some other issues I have with the general operation of it. Please guys, convince me this is a good phone!

It seems like you have something stuck under your trackball, ie lint or dust. You can try some canned air on it to get the obstruction out of there, or depress the trackball and roll it in one direction. If both of those dont work just go to the Cingular Store and get a new one. Dont be turned off by this and exchange your Pearl for a BlackJack. Trust me the Pearl is alot better because it has a stable OS, push email, oh and its form factor is alot nicer as well.

I have got to agree with canonbomb 1987. Get your unit exchanged and "start over" with your new pearl. For the first few days you will find yourself looking for problems but treat it as if it was your first pearl. Like thousands of others, you will soon discover you have made an excellent choice.
Every now and again someone, somewhere will buy what we call in the UK a "lemon". (I thought I'd cornered the marked in this field). Rest assured, you have made the right choice!

Cool thanks. I did try the canned air, it actually spun the ball and i sprayed quite alot, but whatever it is causing the ball's sensor not to pick up upward motion is still there. May try some alcohol, but given the amount of time ive had it, i think I should go get another.

Great, going to have to set it all up again! haha

Well have the people at Cingular transfer your phone book, and even the media you might have stored on there. They should have software to do this with.

Didn't read the whole post but I am assuming you can't scroll either up or down.

Easy fix:
1. Turn phone off (or you might access something unwanted)
2. Push real hard on the track ball
3. While pushing in, scroll up and down.
4. Do it a couple of times and it should be fixed.

Again, I read this post real quick so you might have another prob.

I agree, it's probably a lemon. It's not uncommon for the ball to stick occationally, but it's rare and it goes away. My first one was actually a bit of a lemon too. The */SYM button stuck. I returned it and have never had a problem since! I'm still loving my beautiful pearl and there's nothing wrong with it!

Default Problem Solved. Got a new Pearl! (y)

Cingular took mine straight back, and using DM's restore feature, I was back in business in a few minutes after plugging it in! I even had cut out the IMEI off the box so i can send in my $50 rebate and have no probs going back and returning this one straight across if I really do decide I need a WinMoble phone.

Oops did I just say a bad word ? I think with all the knowledge and support of you good people Ill be able to make the Pearl work for all my needs and Ill probly never even bother trying something else.

Thanks to those who replied to my issue!

chazm, I tried EVERYTHING to get the ball to work. It did begin to respond but was still requiring alot more effort to get it to move Vertical upwards than the other 3 directions.

Me too have such an experience but with the volume control convenience buttons, my Volume UP is not working right from day 2 of purchase, since I live in India and cannot get an exchange, I live with it :(

Though blackberry has a Good OS, many features, when it comes to hardware durability and build quality - it is poor. Compare it with Treos - where the buttons are rock solid.

Get rid of it while you can!!!! I loved my pearl, all four of them. Thats how many t-moble gave me before they let me exchange it for another phone. I kept it for longer than two weeks so I couldnt just return it for another phone. On the third week the speaker died. Every new phone they sent me followed the same pattern. Get out of it while you can. Your track ball issue is an isolated incident but the speakers in the pearl are no good. If that were not a problem I would have to say it was the best phone I ever had. But what since does it make to have a phone that can do almost anything except what it is really made for! Making and receiving calls.
