Default Non-BES email sync/delivery ideas

Please Login to Remove!

I should start by saying I probably won't frequent this forum, but wanted to post things I felt I could add here since this has proven to be one of the best repositries of information for me.

I've had my T-Mobile Pearl for about a week and one of things that dissapointed me at first coming from a Windows Mobile device was the absence of the ability to sync email. The other was the slow delivery off my pop3 server. I tried many different ideas, but settled on this one:

I created a blackberry account (?????@tmo.blackberry.com) and set the phone to use that. I then configured that account at the T-Mobile site to show out going messages as being from my work account. At our email server, I told it to send a copy of all incoming messages to the blackberry account. Viola! I now get new email messages at my phone in less than 10 seconds and have a copy of every email on my computer AND my phone. People don't know about the other email account so there is no confusion and when they reply to emails sent from my phone I get it both places again.

Drawbacks:
You have to mannage two accounts. It's pretty easy on the BB, I just select "save" on any message I might want to reference again (like travel plans) and then I go to the top and choose "delete prior". It was nice to have the ability to delete emails from the server to clean up my work mailbox, but I wanted to be able to have copies of my email at both places. On the plus side, if you accidently blow away an important email from your phone... not to worry, it's still going to be on your computer.

It's not perfect, but it addressed two of the issues I had moving to a BB in a satisfactory way. I still have to forward older emails to my phone that I don't currently have on there, but with the second address that's a snap. I also like getting email -now- which was one of the draws of the BB system. I'm sure the idea is pretty obvious, but I didn't see it mentioned when searching so I thought I would post my findings here.

I tried something similar but I found another drawback. My replies did not show up in my sent items folder on my workstation.

I created a contact using my blackberry email in Active Directory and named it ****'s Blackberry. Then set all of my emails from my work email address to foward to this contact. I would get my work emails instantly on my blackberry (rather than waiting for the 15 min loop). However, when I would reply to an email, my reply would not show up in outlook. I even set my "reply to" email as my work email (in my blackberry email account) in the BIS web interface. No luck. I really wanted my replies to show up in my SENT items. I don't like having to worry about multiple email clutter (personal choice) so I just decided to just go with the 15 minute loop with BIS. If someone needs to contact me instantly from work I just tell them to look in our global address book email me at my blackberry account.

Yes, I meant to include that as a drawback, and it is a big one. I've chosen speed as my biggest need for now, but I might change my mind down the road. I sure wish BB would just sync like my MS Mobile machine!

The "reply to" email is the address that the person who receives your email will send the their reply to.

Having the emails you send from your blackberry show up in your sent folder is pretty easy. Configure BIS via the web interface to auto bcc your work email address, and create a filter to not forward messages sent from this address to your handheld. Then, create a filter in your email client (Outlook) to forward any emails sent by you to your sent folder. Any email you send from your bb will show up as an unread message in your sent folder. (Maybe there is a way to mark them as read, too. I haven't looked into that.)

Yep, I was going to try something like that if I felt like I needed those sent items on my PC, but right now it's working out all right for me. Don't need to check sent items too often.

Great tip though!

I think we should protest BB I have been trying to get information from Cingular and BB if they are addressing this sync issue and I get nothing! I also came from a MS smart phone.

How do you get to the BIS web interface? How do you configure an auto bcc?
