Default Ring profiles/Advanced: Always ring from select users?

Please Login to Remove!

I searched and could not find this. It would seem by setting a custom ringer for a user in your contact list, then selecting the "Advanced" option under "Profiles" you could have a user ring through even if your phone is on quiet. It doesn't work that way though, apparently.

I would like to be able to put my phone on silent while sleeping, then only have my phone ring when certain people call. This would eliminate the most of the riff-raff, while ensuring only the calls I want to take wake me up.

Is this possible?

I am having problems with ringtones as well. I thought that the exceptions in the profiles --> advanced options were for selective ringing/silencing as well, but it doesn't work that way.

My problem is that the selected custom ringtones aren't ringing every time a caller calls (once in a while it will work). And sometimes it will go to the general/default ringtone or other random ringtone (or previously selected one) and sometimes it will go to the T-Mo jingle or classic ring, neither of which are chosen for any of my contacts.

I have been on the phone with T-Mo numerous times for this issue and they have tried to fix the problem with resets, restores, application loaders, patches, etc., and I've even went to the store to exchange phones because they suggested it may be a hardware issue with the actual phone. But it still happens now.

I was on hold with RIM for over an hour last night waiting to speak to a rep, but I gave up and will try again at a less busy time.

I've been playing with it a bit more and have gotten it to work! Mostly...

The trick is to go to "advanced", hit the menu key and pick "new exception". The rest is pretty self-explanatory. Just pick whatever profile you want for that person.

The only problem is it doesn't work all the time...

PCGirl I am having the same problem with my Pearl. I have custom ringtone for special people but when they call it's the t-mobile jingle....which isn't a ringtone I have choosen or it's my defult ringer. Is this a pretty common problem with the Pearl. Let me know if you get through to Rim and what they say.

The following worked for me:

Go to profiles/advanced/menu/new exception then:

Scroll to the "From" area and press the trackball and select the names you want to have excepted from the active profile. Then scroll to the "Use Profile" and select "Normal" or whatever profile you want used when a call is received from that caller. Scroll down and select the Custom Tune you want for the particular callers.

After you are done, hit escape and name the exception.

In the profiles/advanced/Use Active Profiles Except For area confirm that your new exception is reflected and that the boxes under are checked for the exception you just created.

Test the exception. If it doesn't work, remove and then replace the battery and retest.

Good Luck

Hi Ladybug,

I never got through to RIM because I was on hold for so long. I told the TMo rep that I would try back another time because I felt bad because she had to stay on hold with me. A couple of days later I realized that one of my MY FAVES icons had gone blank and was inaccessible. I called TMo and ended up being on the phone for almost two hours. The rep tried everything, from taking the battery out to wiping and restoring. She said that the next tier and/or RIM would try to figure it out and call me back and then connect me to RIM but I haven't heard back from anyone.

In any case, I figured out that it was a MY FAVES issue. What had happened was that when I bought the phone I was told that MY FAVES could be changed once a month on the anniversary date of activation. I still only had four MY FAVES and decided to add the final one. Well, for some reason, the fifth one ended up replacing my first one and on the server but showed up fine on the handset. The first one was now gone from MY FAVES and now all the MY FAVES icons on my phone were out of order and different from the server.

So, bottom line is that all the MY FAVES icons that had custom ringtones weren't aligned in the right MY FAVES spot (hard to tell on the handset since they aren't numbered -- you can tell which is #1 because that is the one that first shows up when you choose to display MY FAVES) so in effect, they had EMPTY custom ringtone spots which defaults to the T-Jingle.

What I did was go to the My T-Mobile website and see what order my MY FAVES were in currently, and then I did a "change location" for the MY FAVES icons so that they would correspond to the server list (which was now all re-arranged). Once they were in the right order, I was then able to choose the ringtone and now everything seems to be working.

By the way, MY FAVES can be changed ONCE A MONTH at the first of each month. Meaning, as soon as it is a new month, that MY FAVE number can be changed at any time during the month (once) before it becomes permanent for the month. I suggest doing the changes from your computer and My T-Mobile so you can actually see where you're putting the numbers. This way, you won't accidentally delete your important numbers!

Hope this helps!

Excellent step-by-step writeup. That is exactly what I did the other day. It worked perfect for my "home" contact (which I was using to test), but did not work for my girlfriend's number. I haven't pulled the battery, however....
