Default RIM 8100 Pearl Pink Screen Defect

Please Login to Remove!

I have recently purchased an 8100 Pearl and have observed that the screen has a pink discoloration that crosses the lower portion of the display. The discoloration is most pronounced when a grey menu is launched and or the display is viewed at an angle. Just above and below the edges of the pink band(s) that run horizontally across the screen, a faint graphic distortion (or interlacing of pixels) can be seen that looks similar to this: "§§§§§§§§§§". I should note that not all 8100 Pearl handsets have this problem. In my research 8 of 10 handsets surveyed have had this problem.

I would like to ask users of this site to inspect their phones and share if they have this problem. I suspect that this problem is widespread.

To see if you phone has this problem launch any menu and hold the phone at various angles. A pink band may cross the screen horizontally at the bottom of the display.

Thank you.

I believe this is a result of the bottom of the menu being a gradient to a different shade of white/gray. I don't think it's a screen defect, just the way the colors of the pixels look.... i.e. it's intentional

I have it, but it is not a distraction whatsoever. I have to hold the phone at a such a severe angle the display is almost out of sight before it appears. Never noticed it until I read this thread.

This is most certainly not intentional. The pink band appears most heavily/ consistently at the bottom of the screen however it is also visible in at least three other areas of the display. On BlackBerry Pearl phones with this problem there are a myriad of other anomalies in how graphics are displayed on the screen. To be clear this is a manufacturing defect and it should be noted that some models do not have this problem.

Wow.. luckily I do not have the discoloration, however if inspected closely, I can find that there is a slight distortion.. almost like a < 1px line break in the screen.. unnoticeable until I tilt the screen and STARE.

So I'm fine :P

I guess you didn't see the 'I don't think' in my message. Just saying what it looks like to me, that's all. The pink band on my phone only appears if I bring up the main menu (from the home screen). But if I bring up JiveTalk, for example, with a pure white background, it's not there. That's why I was of the opinion that it's intentional, since i've only seen it on that one menu. I don't see a myriad of other graphical problems, though. Any examples?

I had this before.... First it started out and i didn't notice... then after a few weeks and different themes/ wallpapers... it got worse... I thought it was a limitation of the screen... then i got a pink line going all the way down the right side of the screen.

I called up tmobile and got it replaced. Now with a mexican pearl, i do not have any pink menu bottoms...

I think it is a manufacturing defect. Get a new one.

Did you put your Pearl in the T-Mobile valentines case? That will turn the screen and the trackball pink.

Another graphic error that appears on phones with the "pink" defect is in the way text boxes and menus with shading are displayed on the screen. The shading of these menus appears greenish or pixelated. To see this, enter the Call Log and press delete to delete a contact. The text box that appears has shading around it and is not displayed correctly or the same as phones without the "pink" defect. It should be noted that if the phone is held at a reverse angle, the pink band can appear green.

I also want to note that this defect:

* Has been found on T-Mobile and Cingular versions of the Blackberry Pearl.
* Does not appear consistently throughout the phone and is a graphic problem (not a physical defect).
* Has been found on units made in Mexico and Canada.
* Is not fixed by changing themes.
* Is not fixed by resetting the phone.
* May be corrected if RIM revises and updates the software for units with this problem.
