| There are themes around.. for instance the "T-Mobile Zen" theme that feature a home screen with something like a dock on a Mac.
Download one and install it.
Second, in order to move a selected application to the home screen you need to bump that app up on the list using "Organize Applications", located in the Options menu of your Pearl.
The additional third party software shouldn't take effect on your Pearl's performance, most don't use up too much memory.
Though you WILL see a decrease in phone performance and load times when running many multiple applications.
E.g. I often have the on board MP3 player running, while using Opera Mini, an IM instance, and texting all at the same time.
However, one thing to note is that applications cannot be stored and run from your MicroSD card... applications can only be installed on the phone's memory.
