Default IM problems (AIM)

I was trying to IM someone who has AIM on my Pearl and I set up the buddy and then AIM tried to find the buddy. I guess the person is not online or something but anyways, its been stuck in the same holding pattern. The screen shows that AOL guy running and the meter is at 25%. I can't get out of this or cancel out. If I hit the end key, I go back to my phone, but then when I click on the IM icon, the screen comes back with the guy running and at 25%. It will stay like that for at least an hour if I don't touch my phone. If I hit the menu button, it just says <empty menu>.

What happened and how do I get out of this?

The application hung.

Pull your battery and reboot. Try again.
