Upgraded last night, from Cingular 0.71 (originally TMo 0.64)

Everything went smooth, except when AppLoader restored my backup, when the phone restarts, it goes into a Uncaught Exception Error Clas... something else, phone unusable!

I wiped it with JL_CMDER, and ran AppLoader again with the new TIM OS, Installed successfully, no problems, however when I manually restored my backup, same Java error made my phone useless. On the initial boot up of the phone it was fine, once I did the first restart/battery pull, it went to that Java error.

So I figured it's something in the backup, causing a problem, I notcied few other people had the same Java error, but I did not see any solution to it, (I might of skipped a few posts/pages lol)

Any help would be appreciated, I can recover my contacts/calendar/notes etc etc from outlook, however I would like to get my Bookmarks and my stored passwords in Password Keeper.

UPDATE: Restored my 0.71 OS, (and wrote down all my passwords from password keeper!) uninstalled all BB OS, and DM software from my PC. Installed DM SP1 that I think John Clark posted a link to. Installed new TIM OS, and then try to do the update again (with automatic backup and all that). Everything flawless, until the first phone reset, then it goes into that same Java Error! So I had to wipe the device again, and I'm doing a clean install of the TIM OS again, and I guess I'll have to enter all my passwords manually, ugh, unless somebody can give me a solution! LOL

Another thing to note, when I do the upgrade from 0.71, and phone boots up for the first time, it says something about security has changed? and phone must restart? something like that, Im not sure what it was. after that restart, that's when I get that 'almost-bricking-my-pearl-java-error'!

Thanks

what additional functionality does the new TIM italy OS offer over the one shown on t-mobile's site (4.2.0.64) ?

i'd like to upgrade as well, but not sure since the last poster had problems with the device. also, would there be additional configs necessary to get back all the certificates/settings to the correct ones for using the phone on tmobile service ?

want to upgrade the phone to the latest OS but want to know of the benefits ?

also, when i have purchased games and apps, how are those handled when you load a new OS ?

i don't see any answers to my question regarding how applications that i purchased are handled when undergoing an OS upgrade.

there are a few apps that i purchased and some of which i had to use my phone to navigate to the installer (OTA). if the desktop manager backs this software up, then is it possible to reinstall it using the desktop manager after the phone gets upgraded to the latest OS ?

so far i have the iberry iphone theme (donated $7 bucks for it). then i also have purchased tetris from handmark ($20). free apps are: colorpearl.

any help on this would be great, thanks.

Use this version of the Desktop Manager:

BlackBerry - BlackBerry - Sys Req V4-2 Pack 1

When you do the upgrade it will back up and reinstall these apps. You may lose some data "inside" the apps, however. I loose my weather profiles in BBWeather and my play lists in dollars5's mediaPlayer but the apps are still there.

thanks for the tip John...

so what's new in the latest installment of the OS ? hopefully just fixes to bugs/issues or additions to functionality ?

regarding my settings (as the phone came configured to work on t-mobile's network) i assume all that is also backed up and restored as well ?

thanks for helping me out, i've been out of tune with phone modding for some time, since this is my first bb i don't want to do something dumb and wind up sitting there for hrs trying to fix it....

The upgrade process is very reliable. It takes about 45 minutes and is quite simple.

Install Desktop Manager 4.2 SP1.
Install the OS package to your PC.
Delete the vendor.xml file located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader
Plug in BB, and run Desktop Manager.

There are a couple places where the process appears to "hang" for up to 20 minutes. It's not hung. Just let it go and be patient. All will be well when you are done.

After reading all 17 pages of this post, I'm still not sure this is a good upgrade. I know many of you got it to work, or can deal with the little flaws that come with it. But after seeing my gf deal with her 4.2 upgrade on her 8700 (I know, not the same thing, but the bugs are almost the same) and having audio drop in and out, the BB freeze up on her, ringtones not working, the wireless randomly shutting off...It just doesn't seem worth it. I guess I'll just wait until another carrier releases an upgrade to 1.66.

This is a great version of OS! Save your data and install it clean, then selectively restore your data.

You know, if you change the defauly number of posts per page to 100, it's only seven pages, not seventeen.

Default Opera mini & TIM Italy problems? - 04-24-2007, 03:42 PM

Hi. I just upgraded to TIM Italy last week, and have had no major problems with this release up to now...

However, I've begun to notice some issues with Opera mini not displaying images on some web sites, and having problems with some forms and (browse to upload) commands.

Is this a general Opera thing, or and actual OS compatibility issue? I don't seem to recall these inconveniences popping up before I upgraded, but then again, this is my first BB, and I only had it for a couple of weeks before I upgraded ...

app loader correctly shows tetris loaded on my phone.

if i install the new OS and lose tetris that's 20 bucks i paid for nuthin...and the 7 bucks i donated for the iberry iphone theme....

Thanks, I have done the OS upgrade but now have a bit of a problem, since the upgrade the Pearl will not connect to the Internet, I am receiving emails OK and the GPRS shows full signal but if I open the browser the GPRS bars disappear (like no signal) and I only get the message:

'Unable to connect to the Internet, Please try again later. If the problem persists please contact your service provider'

needless to say there is no problem with my provider (t-mobile UK) because my other blackberry is working fine (8800) with identical TCP settings and other applications on the blackberry work fine - only opening the browser kills the internet. If I close the browser the GPRS bars reappear - any suggestions appreciated.

You are making way to big of a deal of this. You probably should never upgrade. You are too worried.

If you manually do a backup it won't backup 3rd party apps, only your data. However, when it does a backup during an update it does backup 3rd party apps. You will probably lose your high score in Tetris but the app will still be there when the update is done.

Hi, if anyone can help I would much appreciate it - the OS upgrade killed the internet connection on the Pearl and I have tried just about everything to get it to connect with no success . . . . .

I am definitely no pro, but have you removed and resent all of your service books from your provider? I had some wierd stuff happening until I did that after the upgrade...

It will work fine. Are you using English on your phone? You can go back. You need to find the installable package for your currrent OS, though.

It happens. Here is what you do.

1) Disconnect your phone.
2) Remove the battery.
3) Connect it back via USB without the battery in it.
4) Put the battery in it.
4) Run:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader\loader.exe

You should be back in business. I've had disconnects like this happen on a couple of upgrades. Not sure of the cause.

Hi, Yes I did sent the service books again to the Pearl (tried a couple of times) but I didn't remove the old service books first (I didn't tknow this is possible - you did it?) - do you know how I can do this?

Thanks

Simon

Just go to >Options >Service Books and delete them. Reboot the phone. Then do a Register Now under Host Routing Table.

Thanks but still no internet connection on the Pearl. Not been able to connect even once since the OS upgrade and I can find no way to downgrade back to the old OS. . . . . . This OS upgrade has been very dangerous - killed the internet connection on my Blackberry and nothing I have tried has brought it back.

First, this OS didn't kill the internet connection. Hundreds of people have loaded it without a problem. Something else is happening. You can easily downgrade back to the original OS. Simply uninstall the .66 version from your PC using Control Panel >Settings >Add/Remove Programs. Then install the original OS package from your carrier's website. Plug in the BB and it run Application Loader. It will say downgrade. To be on the safe side you can make your backup then wipe the phone using JL_Cmder and then use Application Loader to put the OS of your choice back on.

Yes I did, and still having problems. Also, ever since I tried this my call log deletes itself every 20 minutes or so.

I have no data plan.

Ok, now I am scared. I did a backup (of the data - I know the standard 'backup and restore' does not back up the blackberry OS - just the data) then used JL-CMDR to wipe the backberry (it is now totally wiped). I have installed the original desktop software onto my PC that came with the Blackberry and there is nothing in application loader.

So, Nothing on my Blackberry and apparently no way to put the operating system back on it.

Desktop manager recongnises the USB of the blackberry but I can't see any way to put the OS back.
