Correct mine did not need it. By the way looking over this whole thread it sure sounds like all teh changes match as to how the 8800 is. Will be updating my Pearl with this too.

OK. I just wiped my Pearl and installed a clean OS. Now it is running smoothly. No more "uncaught exception: java.lang......".

Just installed this without wiping the phone. So far so good. My free memory doubled from 15 to roughly 30mb.

Yeah I restored. Just gotta reinstall the applications back. It's running smoothly.
Is there a way to put your 3rd party IM client into the instant messenger folder?k
Edit: Spoke too soon. Just installed Jivetalk and Operamini 3.1, then phone froze. So I did a battery pull now I'm getting the "uncaught exception" again.

Not sure what happened but something went horribly wrong. I'm getting "App Error 200" with white background!
The phone worked fine until I plugged in for the night to recharge it and that's when the screen froze. Here's the sequence of events:
1. The main screen (I have security enabled) seems frozen or experiencing really slow response.
2. I type in my password but nothing shows on the screen.
3. After a few moments the screen goes white and displays "App Error 200" and "Reset". Clicking "Rest" restarts the cycle.
I've tried removing and reinstalling the battery but that didn't do anything. Even when connected to Desktop Manager the device is non-responsive. HELP!!!
Is there a master reset button somewhere?

Was wondering if it was something in your earlier config. Jivetalk or Operamini... toss a coin, but I'd bet on Jivetalk since it's still beta.

Hmm I updated OK, but then found I didn't have my O2 theme anymore. So I went thru the usual prodedure to put this theme back in, i.e. swapped the blackberry.alx file, but when it was all finished the phone wasn't happy.
An error on bootup and then (eventually) just a list of apps, no icons, no themes etc.
I had to start again with the update and will have to do without the O2 theme until (I guess) O2 issue their version of 4.2.1.

you can wait for jibi to release an updated .alx file. his thread said sometime next week. in the meantime, though, the zen theme (and maybe others) now have a setting to split email from sms/mms, like o2, under messages... options... i believe. read back through this thread and i think it's there.

When the modified .alx file becomes available for unlocked themes, will this have the original T-Mobile Zen theme with the "list" menu view?

I found a small change. When the Alarm goes off the SNOOZE / DISMISS window is a bit wider and cleaner looking.

I feel your pain. Mine did the same so I wipe my Pearl cleaned. Then uninstalled the latest software from my computer then did a fresh install of the older version. Phone wouldn't connect to Desktop Manager so I had no choice but to go back to .71.

Has anyone witnessed any time zone problems since installing this version? I installed it last night and everything worked without any problems, but I noticed something strange with the time. The time on the home screen was correct, but if I went into date / time it was showing one hour earlier. This also meant that my alarm was an hour late this morning!
I had the DST patch applied from before the upgrade and this had been restored as part of the backup. Thinking that this might be the problem I wiped the device. At this point (before putting any service books on) the time was correct. I then re-activated from the BES and I'm now back where I started. The DST patch isn't being downloaded again from the BES (I know it shouldn't be needed on this software anyway)
Any ideas on what could cause this? Does the Desktop Manager need to be a certain version to work correctly with the DST changes? Or is it a BES issue?
I had no issues at all on 4.2.0.x before the upgrade.

My timezone is messed up after upgrading to the new os. After the install, the time appears correctly, but after enterprise activation, thetime shows an hour behind. At my firm, the DST patch was not pushed through the BES, rather, each user was instructed to do it manually.
Any suggestions?

Sounds like a nice update, downloading now.
I'm guessing this doesn't add A2DP support for Bluetooth though? :(

Just to throw some positives on the negatives based on my playing with it so far:
- I did a device battery pull and PC reboot before upgrading (always a good step, start fresh)
- I let it backup, upgrade and restore all my appdata without touching the PC at all, not even opening Firefox (WinXP-SP2, Desktop 4.2 SP1 downloaded from blackberry.com)
Pros:
- I get none of the java.lang / nullpointer / etc. java errors
- my jivetalk and opera work 100% fine. I actually just whacked opera because I never use it anyways
- my timezones *seem* OK; I had DST patch v2.3 installed (there were multiple releases, maybe you have an old bad one installed?) and uninstalled it. I don't see any difference between having it there and not there.
- autodim seems to behave a lot better (smarter?) now
Cons:
- I tried playing one of the preloaded ringtones that cliffr39 was having a problem with; I just now repeated it with a different on (I tried "CoolRunnins") and got the same crash in ClassCast blah blah blah. Definitely something is wrong here.
- some of the menus (PicoNews is a good example) have "quarter entries" at the bottom that didn't used to be there; it's a visual artifacting problem, the new OS allows partial menus to display. The old OS didn't display any of a menu entry unless the entire height of the font could be used.
I'm wondering if a smarter course of action (in general) is to make a manual backup of internal things (address book, bookmarks, etc.), upgrade *without* a backup/restore, then restore only those minor things. Basically, do a reinstall of all 3rd party data/downloads/installs after the fact. This is a pretty big jump, 4.2.0 -> 4.2.1, after all.
Is there an easy way for me to reflash the same OS, doing a low-level wipe? Should I use that jl_cmdr program to do it? I think tonight I might take my own advice and slave off just the internal data, re-up and reinstall by hand all the 3rd party stuff. It's not like it's rocket science to reconfigure BrickBreaker.

Bluetooth On/Off Icon Missing?? -

Everything works great with this update, but for some reason with the T-Mobile Zen theme there is no more Bluetooth On/Off Icon. Anyone else having this problem?

Pardon me for asking, but is this OS update issued by Tmoblile or Cingular (or somebody else)? I know it's a RIM issue, but what carrier?
EDIT: Read thread title: Italy, right? Not for me thanks, I do fine in English. As with the prior Mexican release I'm not "feeling the love" in this thread for it yet. Maybe a leaning tower if pizza theme or something would get me excited about it!

I think the signal level bars displayed in the browser are different than they were in previous versions. This is using the T-Mobile Zen theme. Just one of those completely useless things...

Yikes! Holding down the SYM key does NOT change input mode to numbers only. It used to. Now I have to use two hands to input my password (holding down the shift & pressing numbers). How do I get my shortcut back?

I noticed that too, at first since it was white I thought it meant I had no signal, heh. I also am seeing a "yellow battery bar" in some apps (like the Media Player) that I don't remember from before....but I am not sure if that's new.
Also, the OTA download/install progress bar is a light blue colour instead of the grey/black it was before.

Hold down ^aA and press -^V, it will 'lock' you into Numbers only mode. I didn't know it worked any other way...

I got a few PM reference this so I will add the answer here as well.... Many have asked about the browser at boot issue... Here is how I solved it
If you have the T-Mo messaging service book, then just delete that book and reboot.
If you do not have the book (I did not) then you need to delete ALL service books then resend them. Once you get all the books back delete the T-Mo messaging book and reboot!
Issue solved!

I apologize Lunkhead, but could you please walk me through this? I have Tmobile and have deleted every service book manually except the Tmobile Provisioning (this can't be deleted) then registered with the network, resent service books from Tmobile website, pulled the batt out for 30 seconds and I still get this browser. =\
Edit: I see that you have to delete the "Tmobile Messaging Service" servicebook, however I still don't have this...
