Default 4.2.1.102 / 4.2.1.66 [TIM Italy Release] - 03-15-2007, 07:24 PM

OK, one of you pros (John Clark where are youuuuuuu) tell me -- is this not an entire whole new major release of 8100 software?

==
Software For BlackBerry Pearl 8100 Smartphone

BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.2.1.102 (Multilanguage)

Package Version: 4.2.1.102
Consisting of:

* Applications: 4.2.1.66
* Software Platform: 2.3.0.57
* File name: 8100M_PBr4.2.1_rel102_PL2.3.0.57_A4.2.1.66_TIM_Ita ly.exe
* File size: 72.87MB

Note: The Software Platform and Applications version numbers can be found under Options-About screen on the handheld.
==

Start page:
https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads...190CAAD5802983

Interestingly on the same page they still list the older 4.2.0.XX release at the same time...

To install this update:
1. Download and install the latest version of Desktop Manager
2. Donwload this OS and install it to the PC.
3. Delete the vendor.xml file located in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader (this step is necessary any time an OS is installed from a different carrier than what is branded on the BB.)
4. Plug in BB and open Desktop Manager. You should be prompted to upgrade.

This is the long awaited 4.2.1
There have been a few versions of 4.2.1.xx Pearl code floating around the last few weeks.

This appears to be the first publicly released version I'm aware of.

It should work just fine on your Pearl. A Pearl is a Pearl is a Pearl.

I'm still going through all the download links on that massive Carrier page in the FAQ, but so far this is the newest still.

EDIT: it's the newest, checked every carrier. [2007-03-15 16:52 PST]

Did you mod your blackberry.alx to unlock the themes? Any changes from the 4.2.0.x technique?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.0) BlackBerry8100/4.2.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/100)

I'm curious to know exactly what the update fixes! Might have to give it a shot after class.

Right off the bat..... T-Mo Zen theme NOW (when hitting menu) does not bring up the pop up box where you scroll down to see the apps it now takes you to whole screen icon mode...

When you attach files from the the media card OR BB in email you get warned that they might be shrunk due to size

Haha....

Off I go to play with it... I don't really like the NEW menu tho in T-Mo Zen.. I like the pop up box better than flashing to full screen icon mode...

New tones and ringers as well!

Both Pink and Blue zen themes? Any chance the blue one has a separate SMS/MMS inbox?

For those wondering what changes are in this new version here you go...
  1. Ability to separate sms/email
  2. While typing the text stays highlighted while you're typing the word.
  3. Other word choices for SureType now include italicised words that I assume are words that are not in the dictionary.
  4. The bug where if you delete multiple emails using shift/highlight the cursor doesn't stay in the right place has now been fixed.
  5. GPS menu item in Options--never has anything in it, even with BT GPS puck active.
  6. Under Enterprise Activation in Options it now lists the status with date activated.
  7. Network is now Mobile Network.
  8. Included DST patch appears to have fixed my shared calendar items that were 1 hour off-was waiting for a DST push from BES.
  9. Some videos that used to play, no longer play.
  10. Cingular theme is now AT&T theme.
  11. No option for shooting videos.
  12. Attachments no longer have table of contents. Just click open attachment and it opens right up.
  13. Automatic Backlight off option.
  14. No "Save" option in Alarm Clock. Changes are saved immediately when made.
  15. BBMaps 1.1.25
  16. Under Mobile Network when manual is selected it automatically starts a search for networks.
  17. Default theme has second level icon Application List rather than a menu Application List
Props to John Clark for noting most the items in this list.

Doug

Remember, please try searching first!

Need a screenshot? ... Like JavaLoader?
Try using BBscreen .....Use JL_Cmder!
or BBScreenShooter!

One last additional observation... The OS seems to by much snappier with little to no sluggishness that I experienced before...

Sounds like I might as well let my device upgrade while I watch the hockey game later. Anyone have an edited blackberry.alx for us so I don't have to go do all the work and unlock the themes?

I don't like the sound of that. I've been spending a LOT of time converting movies for the Pearl and they all work. I don't want that work to go to waste. Can anyone elaborate on this issue??
