I am selling my pearl. I just wiped it with JL_CMDER and tried to install the software. The desktop manager software does not recognize the pearl now. Do I have to have a valid SIM in the phone? Shouldn't I be able to update the software without a SIM? How do I get software on this device now?

Be sure you deleted the vendor.xml if the software was released from a carrier that doesn't match your phone. Once that's done, plug it in, open DM and then go to "connections" in the menu at the top. Select "USB" and then open Application Loader. The OS should load.
