Default Pearl / Mac : USB charging current not sufficient - 04-06-2007, 09:51 AM

I receive an error message stating the charging current is not sufficient when connecting my Pearl to my Intel Duo Core2 iMac.

I don't care whether I sync or not, just want to be able to charge my phone.

Are their drivers that I can download to update my iMac so that the USB is properly powered.

I can charge my 8800 with Mac Book Pro with or without the power cord and the only software I installed was Pocket Mac. Not sure if it will help your problem, but you should be able to google it and find it, it's free so it won't hurt to try.

If it were a PC, I'd say install the latest version of Desktop Manager, so...

Install the latest version of PocketMac (now at version 4.0.20)

Sounds like you are plugging it into an unpowered USB plug. Make sure you have it plugged directly into the imac, not a USB hub. Otherwise, try plugging in another USB device that needs a power, to check if the USB plug is actually powered.

Yah you need to install Pocket Mac, that should solve it.

The issue is that a BlackBerry relies upon a piece of software (the Windows driver, for instance) to detect when a BB is plugged in and dynamically adjust the USB current on that port from 100mA to 500mA. On Windows this is the Device Manager install portion (which installs the driver), a Mac needs Pocket Mac, and linux now has 'bcharge' (there is also a new kernel module 'berry_charge' in the upcoming 2.6.21 release.)

I just purchased the Blackberry Pearl and I'm having the same issue where it says that "USB charging is not sufficient, etc..."

I have installed the latest version of PocketMac, and am using a Powerbook G4. When I use iSync to sync, it says that it cannot find a Blackberry connected.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Chris

I get the same message on my C2D iMac, but when I re-plug it in, then it connects just fine. It does this just about every time. But I mostly just use the wall charger so this is not a big issue for me.

One of my USB ports on my MacBook seems to work better for charging my BB.

Try both ports (I also have Pocket Mac installed.)

Plug the USB in to the computer and then take the battery panel off of the phone, remove the battery with the phone on and the a red led will come onwhere your coverage indicator light is and the computer will reinstall the driver. this may work for some of your problems..

Interesting thread. I get this sometimes with my Mac Pro. I don't have PocketMac installed, but I do have Missing Sync. I wonder if I need Pocket Mac as well, although intuitively I would have thought the two would conflict...

Missing Sync will adjust the USB port to the proper current so your phone will charge. I assume pocket mac will as well - but I can't comment on that. I am a missing sync type of guy!

True, but it's waaaaaaaaaaay slower to charge without DM installed.

Default USB power is a recent Apple issue - 10-05-2007, 03:10 PM

Hello

An Apple system update recently caused many Macs to exhibit this exact symptom. I've seen it on a number of machines for miscellaneous USB connections.

Try the Apple forums for help or such sites as MacFixit.com.

I imagine a Mac laptop has a similar option somewhere.

but I don't have the power tab although am using windows xp profitional... please help

Default Not enough power for USB charging. - 12-02-2007, 06:34 PM

I experienced the same with my new BlackBerry Pearl. If you go to your device manager and note the USB devices, and then plug your BlackBerry USB cable into the computer. You will see a new Mass Storage Device or Composite Device has been appended to your list. Select this and update the driver. It will search the web and come back with a Black Berry driver. That is all there is to it.

I use a MacBook with Pocket Mac and never had this problem with my 8730. I did have a problem with the sync messing up the order of the address book. I stopped using the Mac and only sync with my PC. Any ideas how to avoid the problem?

Wild west one... that was a perfect solution. I was dubious as I'm even running Vista 64. That said, I just went to the device manager and found the only Mass Storage Device (the BB was the onlything connected to my laptop) and requested the driver update. Pow! It found it and the BB is no longer complaining of low current. Great solution! Thanks
