Is there a way to collapse messages by day in the message list?

Go to your inbox, click to invoke the drop down menu, choose "options" and click, then click on "general options". Look at the choices there, it's where you go to setup how your inbox messages are displayed.

I looked in those options but I'm not seeing anything in there that will allow me to do what I'm wanting. I'm looking to collapse messages like the browser bookmarks will collapse down into themselves.

No, there is not (so that you can "close up" all of a certain day's email messages). However, you can use various shortcuts to go to the previous days email (pressing the 4 key in the message folder).

Oh... I see now what you want to do. Yes, unfortunately there is no provision for that.
