Hi guys~!

I just downloaded the Gmail Application program into my BlackBerry
8100. But I am having trouble logging in. Every time i try to login,
two messages will appear. The first one says: "Error: An unexpected
error occurred during program execution. Please try your operation
again" The second says: " Network Error:
java.lang.NullPointerException: Cause unknown"

I have tried this step suggested from a guy in another forum...but it still doesn't work...this is the step he/she suggested

Or at least this is what worked for me on my new Blackberry Pearl.
Long story short; it appears to be an install error in which Java must
be on BEFORE you install. Turning on Java and reinstalling over the
old install does not appear to work.

What I did to fix gmail:

1. Go in to the Browser. At the bookmarks screen, select MENU >
OPTIONS > Browser Configuration. Place a check mark to enable both
"Support JavaScript" and "Allow JavaScript Popups". Escape and save.
Exit the Browser.

2. Now remove Google Services by going in to the Blackberry OPTIONS >
ADVANCED OPTIONS > APPLICATIONS. Scroll down and highlight "Google
Services". Press Menu > DELETE. Escape and Save. Your Blackberry
will reboot.

3. Open the Browser and go to mobile.google.com and re-download. Then
it worked.

Note: I was prompted several times to allow http connects to
gmail.google.com, each time I checked both boxes to allow all
connections and accepted it."

Could somebody tell me how to fix this?

For additional information, I am using the smartone-vodafone network
in Hong Kong. Thanks!

Yes, I have exactly the same problem. Gmail application downloads to blackberry pearl 8100 with no problem. Upon initiating the application I get the famous nullpointerexception with cause unknow. My java boxes are ticked, I have the IPPP for 5 clicks service book, I have tried all solutions mentioned in other fora - no result. I am on vodafone, they say they can't help. The same with google maps by the way. Anybody an additional suggestion? Using gmail through the webbrowser on the blackberry works fine by the way...

What OS version do you have? Have you tried a battery-remove reset? Have you tried uninstalling and re-installing the app?

Blackberry 8100 with the blackberry 4.2 core applications, Java installed. I indeed installed and removed the gmail application even a couple times completely, each time I found a new tip on some site, like verifying the IPPP for 5 click service book, checking on a certain certificate, fillinh something in under TCP (APN, username for APN and password for APN, did not work either and then reset this to original = blank). Each time I removed and rebooted, I did a hard reboot, indeed removing battery completly. This is also what vodafone told me I should do. Still.... no luck. I am completely at a loss...!
