Default Metsfan's Trackball Color App (8100 Only) - 04-14-2007, 03:51 AM

THIS APP ONLY WORKS ON THE 8100 PEARL WITH OS 4.2. IT WILL NOT WORK ON ANY OTHER BB MODEL INCLUDING THE 8110, 8120, or 8130 (they don't contain the colored LED's the are in the 8100)

If your 8100 device is running OS 4.5 use the new BlingBall app here.

I know there's already a program to change the trackball color, but it had no OTA install, so I never got around to installing it, and also wanted something I had more control over.

It's pretty simple right now, all it has is enable/disable and color selection. You can set these in Options->ColorPearl.

You can download it here.

I plan to have more options at some point, but need suggestions on what they should be.

Edit: Version 0.2 is out, same download location!

Colors: White, Red, Green, Blue, Cyan, Yellow, Pink, Custom (Hex RRGGBB), Random!

That's really strange. If it made the trackball turn red, it definitely should show up in the options menu. Do you see it in Options->Advanced->Applications so you can delete it?

Well, that program still has features this doesn't. I just wanted something to leave the trackball on a solid color all the time.

+1 , Same problem. I had to reboot to even get the trackball to change color. And yes its listed under Applications to delete. But there isn't any option to change the color.

Wow, another program, well I tried it and it works well, not as many colors but it is free and all. If you're cheap then I guess this program is for you.

The next version will have a "custom" option that lets you put in your own hex RRGGBB number.

I don't have an 8800, so I can't do any testing on it. From what I've read the other program that does this doesn't work on the 8800, so this one probably doesn't either.

i was under the impression that to change the color of the trackball you'd have to open the pearl and marker the LED that illuminates the trackball/keys.

so what colors are available with this app ?

Red, Green, Blue, Yellow... and soon, any color you want.

It used to be you had to open it up, but RIM recently released updated APIs that allows for the color change in software.

Those of you with the problem of ColorPearl not showing up in Options... are you on BIS or BES? Can you use AutoLock and get to the options for that?

AutoLock is another program I wrote that should show up in the options menu the same way ColorPearl does. See my signature for a link to it.

That's not good... I can't imagine my program has done this, but I guess anything's possible. Are you using an 8800?

The only time I had anything like this happen was when my battery was too low to actually start up the phone... try plugging it in. It might just be a weird timing coincidence.

Alright, I reinstalled it once more and was browsing through my options and found it under the options/advanced.. Listed with all the other options, screen keyboard/advanced/applications etc... Not where it shows icons under the menu.

Not sure what it was doing there, as I thought there would be a icon under the menu. I feel like a retard if it wasn't!

Great application, and I can't say enough about it being free!

Thumbs up metsfan!

yes, an 8800. it might be a coincidence, just bummed out this happened. Called cingular and the tier 2 support is closed. as usual level 1 is clueless. asked if I could use a paperclip.

anyone know how to restore the OS? I did a backup yesterday.

Awesome mod, thanks...

I did have the same issue as others though, only shows up in the tools menu, not in my normal apps menu... not a problem for me though, I "set it and forget it" lol... thanks alot for this awesome little app!!! I'll be looking forward to the RGB customization version!

DO NOT attempt to install this on the 8800. It will cause the problem that jjones has.

@jjones,

Use the instructions in the following thread to reinstall your OS.

http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...ipe#post414629

Edit: That being said, once again another great app from Metsfan!

Also, I like that it only shows up in the Options menu. Keeps it all clean and tidy. I'd like to see the SoftReset app just in the Options menu, as well.

I only know this because I suggested to someone with an 8800 that he try the app. He ended up having to wipe it and reload due to the same problem as jjones. He said it wouldn't get past the Cingular splash screen and then would reboot again. Hopefully he's still my friend!

I'd have to search but does the 8800 even have the different colored led's? I seem to remember something now about the 8800 not having the option for the ball to light different colors with mp3 ringtones. That's probably why it doesn't work.

From what I understand, these's no multi-color LED's for the keypad so no program can change it. I have heard of people opening up the BB and coloring them with a sharpie marker... I cant imagine the results being too great but I never saw results so really I can't say.
