I have always used Standby by holding the mute button. All my calls go through. When you get a call the screen lights up and allows you to answer it. However, emails/sms/ect still chime&vibrate but the screen stays dark during arrival and the led becomes active.
Standby = hold MUTE, to come out of standby = press mute once
Key lock = hold *, to come out of key lock= press * then SEND Summary = Standby saves you .5 seconds to go active. Given that you do go in and out of standby 20 times a day, you will save yourself 1 hour a year.
