You could plug your earbuds while you take a pic?

I usually just cough when I take a pic as a little subterfuge!

No, that doesn't do it either - if you really must invade someone's privacy, at least do a search and find the ways of doing it...

The only way that i know of to ditch the camera shutter sound is to re-route it.

Make a call using your earpiece (I know this works with bluetooth, so assume it works with a wired earpiece too). While the call is active, take a picture. The shutter sound will be routed through the earpiece.

Seems useless at first, but I would like to turn off the sound too. Hope its a option in future OS upgrades. =)

seriously, I can think of a hundred situations where that would be useful. Like the fender bender I was in last week. Dumbf$$k didn't want to be reasonable cause he knew he was responsable. So I snapped shots of the dents and his plate. Wasn't the fact of me using my phone, didn't seem to pay attention til he heard that shutter sound. Now he wanted to get confrontational. Sound off feature useful? You tell me. Besides, it's electronically generated and it's a digital camera to boot! Why did we feel the need to replicate a sound for a mechanism that's no longer there? Not to mention extra battery drainage and an added process to the list. Man, people are quick to jump. And that people, is what grinds my gears! Back to you Tom... (for all you family guy fans out there!) what? Nobody got it? Expected a couple giggles at least...sigh

its meant as a safeguard for protection from invasion of personal privacy. i.e. perverts. and it happens a lot. there are ways around it as you can see from people's threads and posts.

and who's quick to jump?

Invasion of personal privacy? Maybe they haven't seen how a digital camera with a telelphoto lens can do, camera phones should be the least of your concerns on invasion of privacy, just an fyi, there's nothing you can do if you are on the street and someone decides to take a pic of you, it has almost the same concept as what you throw in the trash outside of your house, it becomes public property, anyone can pick it up if they wanted to, so if you wear something that you don't want to be photograph in, don't wear it. Oh yeah, I think the sound on the camera is a waste of battery life.

If no shutter sounded, this forum would have quadruple the posts asking "Hey, how come there is no sound or notification that my picture has taken when I click on the button."

camera phones are small, concealable, and most people wouldnt know if you were talking on the phone, typing a text or actually using the camera function. i, myself, am not concerned with the whole invasion of privacy thing and i agree with you on the analogy on throwing trash out. but some horny punks dont just use the camera to take random pics on the streets. things like female upskirt shots are offensive. does that mean there should be a law against wearing skirts to alleviate the issue? though having the option to turn off the shutter sound would be nice, it really isnt a big deal

The invasion doesn't occur on the street. It occurs in a locker room, public restroom or similar place where you have a reasonable expectation of privacy. And the sound is not there to protect the individual - its there to protect RIM. Not that its a bad thing to protect the stockholders. But I do wish it could be turned off, just so the Kaga progeny don't know when I'm taking their pics.

The idea about using the bluetooth and having the shutter sound routed to your ear (if thats what happens) is a good one.

Edited: from the link in post #10: place a call (e.g., to 611), turn the volume down, and click away silently until the call disconnects. Cool.

cheers

aw, don't get defensive on me now. It just seemed like you attacked it off the bat. It came off a little judgmental is all I meant. Don't get me wrong, I can appreciate the privacy issue these days. My point still stands though. And besides sound or no, I don't see how I wouldn't be noticed squating around women snappin shots of goodies! I should have the choice. Just to say again, no offense meant bro.
