Default typing problems

I've had my Pearl for a couple of months and it seemed to be working fine but all of a sudden the sure type is way off. When I try to type even the most basic words it does not recognize them and suggests words which are not even words. Very frustrating!!! It's making it impossible to type anything. I use to be able to more or less type without looking at the screen and it would pick the right word 98% of the time. Now it's wrong 98% of the time and suggests some strange letter combo's which are not words.

Anyone have any idea what is causing this and what I can do to fix it?

Yes, there is an easy fix.

I encountered this same problem when I was new to BlackBerry and found that I had accidentally "stumbled on the keyboard" and reset the "input language" to something else.

Here is how to fix the issue, from the home screen choose:

1) Options
2) Choose Language from the Options list
3) Under Language, set it to English
4) Under Input Method, set it to English

Save the changes and you will be all set.

Cheers...

You are a life saver and I would have been miserable had you not helped me! Turns out I must have hit something by accident because my input language was set to Afrikaans by accident!

Thanks again. I can type again

You are very welcome!

It's nice to help you with this, because I remember all too well the feeling & frustration! And the relief once it was fixed.

In fact now that you mention Afrikaans language, that's exactly the same one that I ended up with. And to this day I still do not know just what key combination I hit to cause this to occur, that's why I called it a "stumble"....

Anyway I will say this, I really love SureType. Just like anything else that's new, it takes a bit of getting used to in the beginning, yet I continue to get faster, more accurate, and truly prefer it over qwerty. A statement that I would have sworn I would not make previously. I had used qwerty for so long on Treos, and others that I was way out of my comfort zone buying my first BB which was a 7130c with SureType. Now I find I can type twice as fast as I ever could with qwerty.

Here's another tip: If you would like to increase your speed even more. Go to Options, Custom Word List, and enter any special (like industry specific, job specific, etc) words you use. That way when you begin to type the word it will automatically come up for you.

Another really great feature is the Auto Text function. I do a lot of contract work, and use this feature a lot. I've found that I can enter long strings of text, paragraphs etc and then assign them a 2 or 3 letter key combination, to insert the them into a document or email etc. Very handy.

Cheers...

Great tips! I too went from a Treo to the BB and can type a lot faster (assuming I have the input language set right ) with the suretype.

I think I hit the wrong combo of keys when I was trying to get the CAPS off before I knew how.

I'm just so happy I can type again without pulling my hair out trying to figure out why none of the words I was typing were showing up on the screen.

Thanks again!!!
