Default Do It Yourself Magnet Holster! [Pictures]

Please Login to Remove!

Have a holster but too cheap to have one that turns your BlackBerry Pearl into Standby mode? Well here's your solution, all you need is a holster that fits your BlackBerry Snug and tight (even the cheap china town ones work), a small magnet, and tape!

Picture of the holster

Behind the holster, as you can see there is a magnet taped onto the back

For proper fit, align the circled spots, the circled spot on the BlackBerry is the spot that detects the magnet. The circled spot on the holster is the spot that you put the magnet to.

Yeah I know that the last 2 pictures are bad quality, the first one is from a 6 megapixel and the last 2 are from a 2 megapixel... sort of misplaced my cameras.... even though this is probably useless to you guys... enjoy!

Just making sure I got this right...you'll spend a couple hundred bucks on the phone, however much for your voice and data plans, but won't pay $15 for the holster?

(P.S. just busting your chops) Nice job on the creativity

Well, I'm a highschool student, gas money kills me and so does my job which is pretty much minimum wage + my income from ebay hehe... money doesn't come as easy to me as other people... I try not to put too much stress on my parents and not ask too much of them. The holster the is a perfect fit for the phone, just without a sleeper function, have magnets lying around so why not put to use =D hehe well yeah thanks for the creativity comment.

Sweet, thanks for the pictures. Time to see if I can stitch a magnet into my pocket and make my pearl auto-lock in my pocket! :D

You know, you could implant the magnet in your body and then you wont have to worry about redoing the magnet trick when you switch holsters Oh wait, that would make the pearl go to standby whenever you pick it up.

Just breaking your balls man, nice idea.

How about putting a very thin vertical cut (just enough to insert the magnet) on the case, put a drop of super glue on the backside of the magnet and slide it in the tiny slit on the case..?

Might look better than the tape??

How big is the magnet? I would worry about having one too strong.

Or maybe even black tape. Good job either way. Necessity is the mother of invention!

I have a couple questions that may help me modify a case that I have. As the magnetic contacts on the Pearl are on the back, do you put the phone in with the face of the phone toward the magnet or do yo put the phone in with the back (or magnet side) toward the magnets? Also, how strong does this magnet have to be? Would a "business card" magnet be strong enough?

My case is a nice leather case from Nite Ize that has an expandable pocket in the back of the holster. They have probably the stongest belt clip on the market. As I go into the field quite often, I cannot (or will not) risk having my Pearl drop off my belt into a trench or ditch, etc. I lost one phone a few years ago into a sprinkler valve pit (20' deep). It had one of those quick release belt clips. And it worked, too. I bent over to open the pit and as I stood up, the phone went, bounced off my knee and kerplunk. To my knowledge, it is still in the pit (I don't work there anymore).

Put your phone into the holster with the back facing the magnet. The place I circled on the phone in the picture is where the sensor is, as for how strong the magnet is, you wouldn't need the strongest of magnets but something that would go through the leather, you could do some testing before you attach it permanently, just make sure it aligns to the part I circled because that's where the sensor is.

Thanks. I found a magent that works. It's just that it's in a clip so I've got to break it out. I might just go to Lowes or HD this weekend and find one.

It should work with the phone facing either way.

Yeah he's pretty much right, in most cases, but it's a tad bit easier for the sleeper function to detect the magnet from the back, it really shouldn't matter though unless you're just a tad bit off on magnetic energy.

Even my $8 case from the swap meet already has a magnet in it. =)

Well, I wasn't as lucky I guess, the people that worked there gave it to me for free and all I think (if I remember correctly) and they probably found it off some Chinatown people hehe.

Default fantastic!

I have always wondered where this sensor was - and this is something I am going to try.

Now for a magnet - how about a hard disk drive magnet? If you live in Silicon valley the disposals places have boxes full of these (or just take an old drive apart).

Not sure, but knowing those magnets I'm pretty sure they're strong enough to trigger it, guess you'll just have to test it out... report back for us =D
