Question Unlocked Pearl --> Provider Connection Issues

Please Login to Remove!

I recently bought an Unlocked Cingular 8100 hoping that I would be able to use it in Pakistan, I received it just 2 days back. excited as hell

I am presently subscribed to a Service Provider (Ufone GSM) who does not have a blackberry service, but I have GPRS enabled on their network and was using it before i made the phone swap, but strangly I get a 'gprs' symbol (small caps) and a message 'data connection refused' I even tried to tweak the TCP/VPN details but no luck and the browser is also missing

I went to the Service Provider (Mobilink World - Home) which does provide Blackberry connections, A visit to the customer service center was depressing to say the least as the reps were saying its not possible to use another providers blackberry device and I would need to purchase their device. They did though accept that they were not experts and have promised to send a blackberry specialist to find out if its at all possible in a day or so. But I sit with a heavy heart, until the specialist comes to check it out.

My question is - If the SIM is acceptable (hence its unlocked) we just need to have GPRS/EDGE enabled and then push emails should work, be it from the official local blackberry provider or be it from an installation of BES Express maybe on my server (though I have read its highly complicated) - Am I right

Why is GPRS / Data connection not working on my present gprs provider is there a technology difference which prevents Data Exchange for the blackberry?

Sorry for bombarding so many questions - but I want to be aware of the entire issue before I get hoodwinked into buying 'their device'

Thanks in advance

Yes there is a difference, you need a blackberry data plan from a carrier that can provide this.

You might need to purchase a new device because of an incompatiblity between your device and their network (ie. GSM vs. CDMA).

Sounds fair - if i choose to remain with my old non-blackberry provider BUT what if I switch to the new blackberry-enabled provider should they have a tough time configuring the unlocked 8100 or is it just simply subscribing to their blackberry plan and hence it should work from there?

Your device should not need to be "configured". If you have an unlocked device with a compatible sim card from another carrier (and a blackbery data plan) then it should work.
